new madrid fault

  • Question:-What are the chance of a New Madrid fault line earthquake?
Do you think there is a chance that a earthquake could hit the New Madrid Fault Line soon? I'm no geologist but it seems like something is getting ready to happen in that area with the dead birds now the flooding.

Answer:-surface conditions such as rain and temperature do not affect earthquakes 10's to 100's of kilometers below the surface.

However, tidal forces from the Sun and Moon can. Changes in rotational patterns. Other earthquakes. Anything that would change the stresses and forces.

There is always a possibility for an old fault line to become active again, and to generate new fault lines.

One would need to study the movement and stress patterns in the area to give a more accurate answer

Also, there is a relationship between the type and size of fault and its strength

Japan and Alaska have convergent plates and subduction causing potentially large quakes

The Dead Sea and East Africa are on Divergent plate boundaries causing potentially small quakes

The San Andreas is on a Translational plate boundary - sideways motion. -> medium sized quakes

New Madrid is in the middle of the North American plate in a non-active to divergent plate boundary scenario. Quakes here would not be very strong or very often compared to Japan, alaska or California
  • Question:-What type of fault is the New Madrid Fault?
We are learning about the New Madrid Fault, I live about 20 miles south of New Madrid, Missouri, as a project we are to find what kind of fault the New Madrid Fault is (thrust, lateral, reverse, or normal). Also, could you tell me your source, correct answer with source will receive an automatic ten points.

Answer:-The New Madrid fault system contains two types of faults, a strike slip segment oriented to the northeast, running from Marked Tree, AR to Caruthersville, MO, and a northwest trending reverse fault that rests below the New Madrid region. Material on the northwest side of the strike-slip fault moves northeast, and up the ramp.
  • Question:-What type of boundry is the new madrid fault?
i'm doing a project for school. isnt the new madrid fault a transform boundry?

Answer:-No, it's an interplate seismic zone. So it's like the Hawaiian hot spot in the middle of the Pacific Plate.
  • Question:-Is it possible that the earthquake today in Illinois could set off the new madrid fault?
I know they said it was a different fault but people along the new madrid fault have said for years that we are past due for "the big one". so can an earthquake in one place cause and earthquake on a nearby fault?

Answer:-it is possable. earthquakes arent predictable

look here for a weird fact about the earthquake today

  • Question:-Could there be a New Madrid fault line earthquake?
How likely is a New Madrid Fault Line earthquake? With the dead birds and flooding in that area.

Answer:-Dead birds have nothing to do with earthquakes. It could happen any day, but the odds of it happening any time soon are very remote.

I live in So Cal and we are far more likely to get a big shake, but I don't let it bother me. For teh New Madrid, it is more likely that it will happen to your kid's kid's kid's kid's kid's kids. Or even further away than that.
  • Question:-Is BP responsible for the recent tectonic activity along the New Madrid fault?
What in the world is happening in the middle of the United States right now? Thousands of birds are falling dead from the skies, tens of thousands of fish are washing up on shore dead, earthquakes are popping up in weird and unexpected places and people are starting to get really freaked out about all of this.

Well, one theory is that the New Madrid fault zone is coming to life. The New Madrid fault zone is six times bigger than the San Andreas fault zone in California and it covers portions of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. The biggest earthquakes in the history of the United States were caused by the New Madrid fault. Now there are fears that the New Madrid fault zone could be coming to life again, and if a "killer earthquake" does strike it could change all of our lives forever.

Jack M. Reed, a retired Texaco geologist-geophysicist, has been carefully studying the geology of the Gulf of Mexico for over 40 years. Reed is convinced that the Gulf of Mexico is currently tectonically active, and that the Gulf of Mexico is the source for most seismic activity along the New Madrid fault.

One interesting theory is that the "oil volcano" unleashed by the BP oil spill in 2010 may have sparked renewed seismic activity in that part of the world.
    According to Reed,...
"This entire zone through the United States is suffering some type of tectonic activity that I believe is tied to the deeply buried tectonics in the Gulf of Mexico."
    http://www.aapg.org/explorer/2002/11nov/rift_zone.cfm

So did BP disturb those "deeply buried tectonics" by drilling such a deep well and unleashing all that oil that flowed into the Gulf of Mexico?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0tVbjrbkp8&feature=player_embedded
EDIT: Teekno,...what are you talking about?
Have hundreds of birds been falling from the sky and THOUSANDS of fish been washing ashore DEAD for 1000's of years?

    REALLY?

    Huh!

Answer:-I don't know, it needs more investigation. Of course the Righties will poo-poo it and call it a waste of money.

Somebody need to get it through their heads money won't matter when the planet dies.
  • Question:-Regarding recent EQ activity in California and New Madrid fault zones?
I have noticed a lot of EQ activity in California, usually up to 4.2 or so. It's all over the state (Northern, Central, and Southern).

Also noticed activity in the New Madrid seismic region in the midwest, though on a much smaller scale, 1s and 2s on the richter.

Do these mean that a larger quake is coming in the relatively near future? I know New Madrid is pretty close to due for a quake.
For the record, since someone brought it up, I do NOT live in either region. I am just seismically curious.

Answer:-I don't know if that fault is due for a big one like the San Andreas fault is.
Because a fault is recently active doesn't mean a BIG ONE is coming for that fault. The small quakes could just be a release of pressure on the fault and a larger one would not be needed.
On the other hand these small quakes could be small slips adding pressure or getting closer to a larger slip or break on the fault. This is something we can't be sure of.

Also these small quakes on the New Madrid fault could also be effecting other faults by adding pressure or movement which could lead to quakes on these faults.
  • Question:-When do you think the New Madrid Fault will cause a devastating Earthquake?
I live in Southwest Missouri, but I'm originally from Southeast Missouri. With all these big Earthquakes in Chile and Haiti there's been a lot of talk around here that the New Madrid could be next. I know it's been predicted for many years now that it could happen anytime. When do you think it will happen? How bad do you think it will be?

Answer:-I live in Middle Tennessee, and the New Madrid fault has been one of my worst fears for a long time. I thought Middle TN would be far enough away, at first, to avoid serious damage. But after hearing that the earthquakes in 1811 and 1812 rang churchbells in boston, cracked sidewalks in Washington DC, and made the Mississippi flow backwards for a little while that kind of scared me.

I have done a lot of reading, and surprisingly the shockingly high (or so it seems) number of earthquakes we have been having is normal! Heck, with one hitting Turkey just this morning I might be suspicious, but here is a link to a USGS question... I would also suggest checking out the link provided in their answer to help put things into perspective:

    http://www.usgs.gov/faq/faq.asp?id=153&category_id=10

Something else that might make you feel better... In 2009 experts have been saying that they think the fault is dying, or shutting down. It doesn't really compare to active faults out there today, plus they think the small earthquakes we have today are still aftershocks from the 3 really really big ones almost 200 years ago. You can get more info by clicking this link:

    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/03/090313145956.htm

Hope this makes you feel better. If you still want to play it safe (which you should) there are a few links on USGS all about earthquake safety and how to prepare. Remember to have an evacuation plan ready with your WHOLE family and a survival kit in your home... Also ...Look into earthquake insurance! ;)

  • Question:-How could new madrid fault created?
is it created by the new madrid earthquake that happened about 200 years ago or is it because of something else? what is the impact of the new madrid earthquake?

Answer:-The New Madrid earthquake occurred because it is the boundary between two tectonic plates (or more likely a large crack or fault in the N America plate). It probably was there long before the earthquake 200+ years ago. All earthquake faults are areas where there are cracks between two huge pieces of the earth's crust or, at least, two very substantial bodies of rock.

If there was another earthquake the size of the one 200 years ago, it would be pretty bad for St Louis and all the small cities and towns in that part of Mo & Il. Given that the last one did some damage in Chicago and the fact that there are a LOT more buildings in that part of the country today, the damage could be really bad. Look at what happened in Italy this weekend and that was a fairly small quake.

Of course there are lots of other potentially devastating natural phenomena that would be as bad or worse.
  • Question:-What are the chances of a Major earthquake in the New Madrid Fault Zone?
I've been hearing about small quakes in Oklahoma and then in South Carolina and I just wondered if there is any danger from this fault.
Thank You, Mr. Peanut, for the article. It's very informative.

Answer:-The chances are very good. Wikipedia says that "The New Madrid fault and Earthquake prone region is considered at high risk today"

Here's a great article on the subject:

paranormal activity 3 trailer

  • Question:-Why are there clips in the paranormal activity 3 trailer that aren't in the movie?
Ok, I just watched Paranormal Activity 3 last night. It was pretty good. But what I am wondering is why are there A LOT of scenes from the trailer that aren't in the movie? Do they do that with all movies? I was sitting through the whole movie wondering when this one scene was going to happen but it never did. It was sort of annoying. Why do they do that?

    Answer:-
  • Question:-What do you think of the paranormal activity 3 trailer?
I think it's going to be badass. I liked the bloody Mary part, it didn't scare me but it did my sister, haha. Going to go and watch it next Friday. Do you all think it'll be a good movie?

    Answer:-
  • Question:-Why does the Paranormal Activity 3 trailer scare me shitless.?
I watched Paranormal Activity 1 and 2, and it was no biggie, i wasnt even scared. I watched the trailer for the 3rd one and it had me scared shitless...i couldnt bring myself to press the replay button.
I watched the first 2 though and they were nothing...

    Answer:-Because you find it scary?
  • Question:-when is the trailer for paranormal activity 3 going to come out?
when is the trailer for paranormal activity 3 going to come out?

Answer:-According to the director it was supposed to be released on the 5th of this month but I guess not but at least we know when the movie is going to be released which is october 21 2011 I hope its like 3 hours
  • Question:-Why are the scenes in the Paranormal Activity 3 trailer not in the movie that is showing in the theater?

    Answer:-
  • Question:-Is the paranormal activity 3 trailer scary?
just wandering, i hate scary little girls and ghostley characters and demons :/

Answer:-It depends on what you find scary; all it is is people running around, getting dragged around and yelling. You don't really see anything evil until the end, when two twin girls jokingly say Bloody Mary in front of the mirror, and upon leaving the bathroom you see the figure of a ghost woman (but you don't see an evil face or anything). Seriously, I watched it in HD in full screen with full volume and I didn't find it that bad, but if ghost girls scare you then, maybe the end would be creepy for you.
  • Question:-did you see the paranormal activity 3 trailer (cont)?
where there was the little girl who could see and talk to ghosts and she whispered at night 'I don't want to talk to you anymore' So I saw it and thought cool and creepy what did you think?

Answer:-those movies are creepy as hell but they're so fake, i'v looked them up.
  • Question:-paranormal activity 3!!!!!!! (trailer review)?
OMG OMG OMG it looks so scary. they are like in the bathroom screaming bloody mary bloody mary bloody mary. then the one girl saying it screams the scare tho others. then they leave thinking that that was just a myth and they were doing it to scare there sisters. but when they leave and open the door theres a scary as hell looking girl behing them but they dint see it. its freaky as hell.

    Answer:-Lol

Ok, first of all, I am a HUGE fan of the series so far. But that scene in the trailer looked really weak. It was creepy UNTIL the scary looking girl showed up. I hope the rest of the movie is better.
  • Question:-Paranormal Activity 3 Malaysian Shuffle Remix?
I saw a malaysian shuffling vid on youtube of kids battling. (i dont remember the name of it) One of the kids started shuffling and his song was suuuper cool and had like sound clips from the new Paranormal Activity 3 trailer (like the girls laughing and saying "bloody mary" and their dad in the background saying "look at the camera katie") if anyone knows of this song, can u please tell me!!? my guess is that its pretty low key becuz i couldnt find anything like it on the web. thx!

    Answer:-
  • Question:-paranormal activity 3 what happened to trailer parts?
What happened to the parts that the movie trailers showed i didn't see them in the actual movie

    Answer:-

paranormal activity

  • Question:-Paranormal activity?
I experience paranormal activity almost always. I have for about a year and a half now.. Is it reality or schizophrenia?

Answer:-Well, it depends on what you are experiencing. Are you seeing things, hearing things, or just have a paranoid feeling that something is watching you? I don't know what to tell you about it without more info. If you are actually seeing and hearing things, I would tell your doctor that you have having some hallucinations and see what they say. Hallucinations could also be caused by depression and substance use.
  • Question:-Paranormal Activity ?
Has anyone seen Paranormal Activity, thinking about seeing it tomorrow but don't want to if it's stupid..

No spoilers please - just, is it really scary like their saying - and worth watching?

    Thanks.

Answer:-It is good to see, as a cultural phenomenon, because EVERYONE is talking about it. However, it really isnt that great of a movie. Several jump/scare parts, but it gets a little predictable. Plus the actors get annoying. You should see it, since there isnt much else to watch.
  • Question:-paranormal activity..?
do u have to see paranormal activity 1 to no whats going on in paranormal activity 2?

Answer:-it helps and makes the moviue better
  • Question:-PARANORMAL ACTIVITY!!?
ok so i just saw the movie paranormal activity and it waz ssooo good can someone plz explain the alternate ending and the real ending to me plz!!

    thanx

Answer:-First off you must realize that this was not a true story it was made along the lines as blairwitch as a documentory the alternate ending was just her walking into the room and cutting her own throat just like the story they read online in a ealier scene meaning it was the same entity that made that girl kill her boyfriend and cut herown throat the one used in the movie was just the ending they thought would get the most reaction and rating's from the public and it worked this movie cost $ 14,000 to make and earned millions at the box office I woulld say that was a good investment would'nt you ? but both the endings were in relation to the story they had read online in one of the earlier scenes about a couple who had been haunted and they both died from this entity ( this story that is based soley on fiction)
  • Question:-Paranormal ACtivity!?
ok well this is gunna sound reely stupid but I'm an 8th grader at a catholic school and we always have to take pictures of special days at our school. WE noticed some circular weird objects in them some of them & kids in my class decided it was paranormal activity So my class decided to go all Ghost Hunter and took pictures of the gym w/ the lights off. then alot of these cirucular things came up in the pictures...they're called orbs and it means paranormal activity is happeneing..i really dont know what to beilve lol but does anyone know anything more aobut this stuff?

Answer:-I encourage you to consider an alternative explanation. There are plenty of them out there. The most reliable and consistent explanation will be a natural one. I know it's not as creepy, but it's a fact. Orbs are nothing more than small particles reflecting the light from the sun or your flash.
  • Question:-What is a good method to verify paranormal activity?
What is a good scientific way to verify if paranormal activity is happening? Has any paranormal activity been verified through this method?

Answer:-The scientific method is all about isolating aspects of a problem and figuring out what effects changes in those aspects bring about.
Lets say a ghost is haunting a location. If you can draw this ghost out in a repeatable manner, and say have it show up on a photo, or video, or even an audio, then this would be a crude, but scientific way of verifying ghosts.

There are some things that were thought to be paranormal at one time, that science has identified, like germs.

Actually, by definition, something paranormal is not approachable by science, therefore if science did verify something which was paranormal, it would no longer be considered paranormal, it would be an identified part of the natural world. We can't see germs, and some people might doubt they exist, but they are not considered paranormal, because science has been able to identify their existence. The same thing would happen if science identified ghosts as real. They would no longer be paranormal.

So anything currently classified as paranormal, has not been verified as real.
  • Question:-Why does paranormal activity always happen to White people?
I have seen a lot of the discovery Channel shows and some movies based on paranormal activity. All the time, there is a White person getting haunted.

Asians, Hispanics, Indians (India), Middle Eastern people and us Blacks do not have to experience that type of stuff.

Do ghosts just find it fun to bother White people?

Answer:-cuz white ppl r crazy! lol j/k im white & i think everybody is crazy,

actually asians, most hispanics, and indians in particular are very spiritual. white people go after things that scare them for some reason which is why all the ridiculous paranormal shows are on tv. 99% of which is fake & there for people to make money and/or make fun of uneducated people. it doesnt just happen to white people i know blacks who have "encountered" ghosts too. believe me you cant believe 99% of anything paranormal on tv & DEFINITELY not those HORRIBLE movies they keep coming out with.

if theres anything real thats "paranormal" the most scientifically possible is poltergeist. there are scientist who agree & disagree with this just like many other great debates. but there has been scientific proof of poltergeist like in the movie thats supposedly based on a true story "An American Haunting"
  • Question:-Is Insidious and Paranormal Activity filmed in the same house?
I just watched Insidious, and the inside of house in the first 40 minutes looks exactly like the inside of the house in Paranormal Activity. I know both movies have the same producers, but did they use the same set?

Answer:-Paranormal Activity was filmed on Bavarian Dr. in Rancho
    Penasquitos, San Diego CA

Insidious was filmed in Los Angeles
  • Question:-Is feeling hot spots a sign of paranormal activity?
I've heard that cold spots are signs of paranormal activity, but I just keep feeling these hot spots when there are no possible sources.
There are also occurrences of unexplained bangs and things falling down stairs. But I haven't seen or heard any ghostly figures or voices. Please explain.

Answer:-In a typical dwelling there can be many sources of drafts or colder temperature that are not immediately obvious. As a corollary, there will also be warmer spots in the house as well for the same reasons. In addition, human physiology (and its response to stimuli such as fear or anxiety) can also explain the feeling of warmth or cold. It's only a modern day myth that cold spots are associated with ghost activity -- nobody can even demonstrate a ghost exists, so how can you determine that cold spots are a sign of ghosts?

Regarding bangs or knocks in the house, these can typically be heard in most houses and it is caused by the beams and flooring expanding or contracting with temperature and humidity. Another common source of knocking sounds is loose plumbing pipes in the walls.
  • Question:-What happened to the real people paranormal activity is based on?
Okay so apparently paranormal activity is based on real events?
Does anyone no what sort of things happened? or did they die or what? Because if the things that happened to them in paramormal activity really did happen then that horrible

    Thanks

Answer:-Chelsea, the expression "based on real events" is just something that film-producers (and others) use to market their movies and to give you and me the more entertaining feeling that we are watching something that has actually happened. However, "based on real events" has a very broad span of interpretation and the film-makers draw from that. Say, for example, that there is a REAL missing-person-case, a person disappeared under mysterious circumstances in a forest somewhere, it happens. The case is unsolved and many questions remain as to how and why it happened. Such a case is a perfect opportunity for someone who wants to write a script or a book, to develop that real case and fictionally "solve" it. The writer could perhaps solve the case by letting alien-abductions be the explanation, or demons. or you name it.

Whatever story the writer comes up with he or she can claim that it's based on real events. Though the story, as a whole, is not necessarily something that has really happened. That's how it works.

    Edit:
Note the important difference between "BASED ON real events" and "real events".
