• Question:-What are the golden cocoons falling off my Live Oak trees in New Orleans since August?
  My yard, car, driveway and deck are covered in a gold colored cocoon that seems to hang on the bottom of the leaves of my Live Oak Trees. They are everywhere, like little cotton balls and there seems to be no end in sight for their presence in my yard, under the hood of my car, inside the house, etc... What are they? I have never seen this before in 35 years of living in New Orleans. Does it have anything to do with global warming?
  
  Answer:-Not sure if it has anything to do with global warming, unless that's changing the environment where you live so that pests have a greater chance of survival. Without seeing the items it's hard to guess - take some (in a plastic baggie) to your local Master Gardener or Botanic Garden place (you can find them on the web) and they should be able to ID it for you.

  Answer:-The neighbor can trim straight up the property line if he wants to.
• Question:-How often should I plant a 4" caliper live oak tree during the winter months?
  I just purchased and transplanted this live oak tree to my front yard, and I need to know how often I should water in the winter, and summer.
  
  Answer:-You don't say where you live. But generally speaking such a plant would need very little water in the winter as it is not the growing season just as long as the ground is moist that is sufficient. In the spring when the new leaves appear you could put a little fertilizer near it but just a little and not right against the plant , and as the season warms up keep the soil moist but not saturated , some mulch around the tree will help to prevent the ground from drying out. It may also be necessary to put some sort of guard around the tree to prevent rabbits eating it.

  I want to plant a Live Oak tree near my house for shade. I am concerned about the roots growing under the foundation of my house.
  
  Answer:-Live oaks are very slow-growing and will not produce substantial shade for many years. If you decide to plant one, you should plant it at least 15 ft away from any structure, not because of root invasion, but because of the size of the eventual canopy. These trees need to be planted away from other vegetation (lawns, ivy) because they will develop crown rot if exposed to regular watering. In their native habitat, they rely only on winter and spring rainfall (20 in/year)
• Question:-how to get rid of live oak shoots?
  I live in Florida. The neighbour has a live oak tree. My garden is full of shoots. Are they coming from the roots or seeds? The ground is full of roots. I have tried weedkiller but they just sprout again. Any suggestions about how to get rid of them or what to plant in the area. I gave up trying to dig the roots out. This garden has been negected for years, so I am trying to get it into shape.
  
  Answer:-Be aware that if you kill the tree by using a systemic herbicide or chopping off roots, you could be sued for the replacement value, which could be thousands for a mature tree.
  
  You could use raised beds in wood frames, but that is expensive. Why not a ground cover of gravel or bark and a bench? A few flowers in large pots.
• Question:-What could be causing my Live Oak tree to turn brown?
  I just moved into a new home in Texas, the builders planted a Live Oak in the front yard. Some of the leaves are turning brown. I have watered the tree every 3 or 4 days. Any ideas what is causing the tree to have brown leaves? Our soil is very poor clay and I have not fertilized it in the 30 days I have lived in the newly constructed house.
  
  Answer:-I have had 5 yrs in the Custom landscape industry and have a couple of recommedations. One. If there is a ring of mulch around the tree anything higher than ground level could be causing difficulties in the production of photosynthesis. It kind of causes the tree to "suffocate" and hinders the xylem-phloem circulation. Two. you may have to dig down to the root ball and see if the "genisuses" that installed the tree remembered to cut away the burlap wrap. And Three. Look around your near by neighbors and see if their trees are in the same predicament (look on and under the leaves for possible spots) could be a fungal/bacteria issues, both of which are easy enough to solve with a tree spray found at most local nurseries.   Answer:-No, you can move it now. Get as much of the dirt around the root ball as possible, add fertilizer to the soil and water well after moving and it should be fine.
• Question:-Why does Spanish moss only grow on hardwoods like live oak?
  Why doesn't it grow as often on pine trees, and never on trees like palm? what features of the live oak make it a good candidate for Spanish moss growth?
  
  Answer:-You have made a very interesting observation that I had never thought of. First, Spanish Moss is the common name for Tillandsia usneoides, a member of the pineapple family. It is not actually a moss but is a flowering plant. Once a year you can find a tiny red flower on the end of the strands. It is an "airplant" and grows on trees as a epiphyte, not a parasite. It just uses the tree for a place to hang and grow and doesn't harm the tree.
  
  I found an article in the American Journal of Botany from 1977 which explains that certain trees like live oak and cypress have an abundance of minerals which they leach out through their leaves. The pine trees do not do this. Studies of Spanish Moss in oak groves and pine forests show that the Spanish Moss is more abundant and has a higher mineral content than the Spanish Moss in the pine forest.

  Answer:-They are possibly an oak gall. It is caused by an insect. Usually a type of wasp. Look at the web site below. They don't seem to affect tree health so don't worry about them.

If it sparks when it makes contact with the battery post then there is a short somewhere! Something is open somewhere and I would venture to guess that it might be somewhere in your power windows switches. I believe that a short in this area is the culprit my friend!

What's the soil like there? What exactly do you see? Is it browning from the inside? Are the tips still green? Is it browning from the bottom up? top down? The more specifics, the better we can narrow down the possibilities.

  This is an ancient festivity that has been much transformed through the years, but which was intended in prehispanic Mexico to celebrate children and the dead. Hence, the best way to describe this Mexican holiday is to say that it is a time when Mexican families remember their dead, and the continuity of life.
  Two important things to know about the Mexican Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) are:
  
  It is a holiday with a complex history, and therefore its observance varies quite a bit by region and by degree of urbanization.
  
  It is not a morbid occasion, but rather a festive time.
  The original celebration can be traced to many Mesoamerican native traditions, such as the festivities held during the Aztec month of Miccailhuitontli, ritually presided by the "Lady of the Dead" (Mictecacihuatl), and dedicated to children and the dead. In the Aztec calendar, this ritual fell roughly at the end of the Gregorian month of July and the beginning of August, but in the postconquest era it was moved by Spanish priests so that it coincided with the Christian holiday of All Hallows Eve (in Spanish: "Día de Todos Santos.") This was a vain effort to transform the observance from a profane to a Christian celebration. The result is that Mexicans now celebrate the day of the dead during the first two days of November, rather than at the beginning of summer. But remember the dead they still do, and the modern festivity is characterized by the traditional Mexican blend of ancient aboriginal and introduced Christian features.
  
  Generalizing broadly, the holiday's activities consist of families (1) welcoming their dead back into their homes, and (2) visiting the graves of their close kin. At the cemetery, family members engage in sprucing up the gravesite, decorating it with flowers, setting out and enjoying a picnic, and interacting socially with other family and community members who gather there. In both cases, celebrants believe that the souls of the dead return and are all around them. Families remember the departed by telling stories about them. The meals prepared for these picnics are sumptuous, usually featuring meat dishes in spicy sauces, chocolate beverages, cookies, sugary confections in a variety of animal or skull shapes, and a special egg-batter bread ("pan de muerto," or bread of the dead). Gravesites and family altars are profusely decorated with flowers (primarily large, bright flowers such as marigolds and chrysanthemums), and adorned with religious amulets and with offerings of food, cigarettes and alcoholic beverages.   In homes observant families create an altar and decorate it with items that they believe are beautiful and attractive to the souls of their departed ones. Such items include offerings of flowers and food, but also things that will remind the living of the departed (such as their photographs, a diploma, or an article of clothing), and the things that the dead prized and enjoyed while they lived. This is done to entice the dead and assure that their souls actually return to take part in the remembrance. In very traditional settings, typically found only in native communities, the path from the street to the altar is actually strewn with petals to guide the returning soul to its altar and the bosom of the family.The traditional observance calls for departed children to be remembered during the first day of the festivity (the Day of the Little Angels, "Día de los Angelitos"), and for adults to be remembered on the second day. Traditionally, this is accompanied by a feast during the early morning hours of November the 2nd, the Day of the Dead proper, though modern urban Mexican families usually observe the Day of the Dead with only a special family supper featuring the bread of the dead. In southern Mexico, for example in the city of Puebla, it is good luck to be the one who bites into the plastic toy skeleton hidden by the baker in each rounded loaf. Friends and family members give one another gifts consisting of sugar skeletons or other items with a death motif, and the gift is more prized if the skull or skeleton is embossed with one's own name. Another variation found in the state of Oaxaca is for bread to be molded into the shape of a body or burial wrap, and for a face to be embedded on one end of the loaf.   I have a graduation trip on the 18th of May on an island and I would like to lose some weight before. I am an 8th grader so most of my time is spent at home or at school. Instead, I found some ways to exercise in between.

  This is actually my father's car. He was driving recently and noticed the oil light came on, so he put in a quart of oil. The light went out, so he continued driving. The same thing happens again the next day. This time, after the light goes out and he goes back about his business, the car starts making funny sounds, at which point he stops and has it towed to the dealership. They tell him the motor is blown because of low oil pressure, and it will cost $12,000 to either replace the engine or fix it, I'm not sure which. What can he do? He still has 6 or 8 payments left. Is it unlikely that his insurance will do anything for him? Should he try and find someone to buy it for parts? Please help.

El Dia De Los Muertos actually falls on All Saints Day...which is celebrated in Peru. See 1st site below for an article on Yahoo Peru about the all Saints Day celebration. People go to the the cemeteries to clean the grave sites, take flowers, and remember loved ones who have died. This holiday is distinctly Mexican, tho it is recognized in Bolivia and Brazil also...but not in all Latin American countries. All Saints Day, on the other hand, is a religious holiday recognized in all Catholic countries. 2nd and 3rd sites below tell about All Saints Day in Peru.

• Question:-How to start celebrating Dia De Los Muertos?
  I'm Mexican but born in America and my family hasn't celebrated Dia de los Muertos since they left Mexico 20+ years ago. Mostly because there hasn't been many deaths in our family in a long time.
  
  Anyways, the past few years has brought about the death of my great-grandparents, an uncle, and a friend. What would be a good simple way to start honoring them on this day?
  
  Answer:-Start a family altar with their pictures just for the event, not for all year long. What are some things that they particularly liked? Gather up those things to place in their sections. Usually Virgin of Guadalupe images are included. There is a special incense that is burned and flowers as well. Finally, you include their favorite foods.
  My mother loved avocados and olives. Olives are easy because I don't have to open the can or jar until the last few days, but avocados will spoil if I don't buy them at the last minute.
  Just a few ideas.
• Question:-Dia de los muertos (Day of The Dead)- easy recipes?
  I would like to make some Dia de los muertos food for a college class, any suggestions? I don't' have enough time to do the skulls since I would have to get a kit. Something that is not too time consuming but delicious would be great :-)

  Answer:-Pan de Muerto is a great dish.
  It's a very yummy bread sprinkled with sugar traditionally severed on day of the dead. It's very easy to make, and recipes are everywhere.

• Question:-Is it inappropriate or disrespectful to have a "Dia de los muertos" themed wedding?
  We want to have a Day of the Dead themed wedding. Since Dia de Los Muertos is generally a holiday that celebrates death and rebirth, a reasonably significant theme in our relationship, we thought it wouldn't be totally unacceptable. But if anybody has any opinions based in experience, we'd love to hear about it.

• Question:-El Dia de Los Muertos lesson ideas for 8th grade Spanish students?
  I teach elementary Spanish, and wanted to do some activities with my older Spanish students for El Dia de Los Muertos. We're having an all-school service on that day for the first time, but I wanted to teach my students more about it. Any good ideas besides me standing in front of them talking?
  
  Answer:-i take 8th grade Spanish and my teacher is doing a trivia game after she talks and offering a prize after so if we pay attention we win a prize! its a great incentive!

  I've always loved the Dia de los Muertos mexican art, And im wondering if there's a certain name for it. Like the skulls and skeletons and the calavera catrinas.
