• Question:-What are the golden cocoons falling off my Live Oak trees in New Orleans since August?
  My yard, car, driveway and deck are covered in a gold colored cocoon that seems to hang on the bottom of the leaves of my Live Oak Trees. They are everywhere, like little cotton balls and there seems to be no end in sight for their presence in my yard, under the hood of my car, inside the house, etc... What are they? I have never seen this before in 35 years of living in New Orleans. Does it have anything to do with global warming?
  
  Answer:-Not sure if it has anything to do with global warming, unless that's changing the environment where you live so that pests have a greater chance of survival. Without seeing the items it's hard to guess - take some (in a plastic baggie) to your local Master Gardener or Botanic Garden place (you can find them on the web) and they should be able to ID it for you.

  Answer:-The neighbor can trim straight up the property line if he wants to.
• Question:-How often should I plant a 4" caliper live oak tree during the winter months?
  I just purchased and transplanted this live oak tree to my front yard, and I need to know how often I should water in the winter, and summer.
  
  Answer:-You don't say where you live. But generally speaking such a plant would need very little water in the winter as it is not the growing season just as long as the ground is moist that is sufficient. In the spring when the new leaves appear you could put a little fertilizer near it but just a little and not right against the plant , and as the season warms up keep the soil moist but not saturated , some mulch around the tree will help to prevent the ground from drying out. It may also be necessary to put some sort of guard around the tree to prevent rabbits eating it.

  I want to plant a Live Oak tree near my house for shade. I am concerned about the roots growing under the foundation of my house.
  
  Answer:-Live oaks are very slow-growing and will not produce substantial shade for many years. If you decide to plant one, you should plant it at least 15 ft away from any structure, not because of root invasion, but because of the size of the eventual canopy. These trees need to be planted away from other vegetation (lawns, ivy) because they will develop crown rot if exposed to regular watering. In their native habitat, they rely only on winter and spring rainfall (20 in/year)
• Question:-how to get rid of live oak shoots?
  I live in Florida. The neighbour has a live oak tree. My garden is full of shoots. Are they coming from the roots or seeds? The ground is full of roots. I have tried weedkiller but they just sprout again. Any suggestions about how to get rid of them or what to plant in the area. I gave up trying to dig the roots out. This garden has been negected for years, so I am trying to get it into shape.
  
  Answer:-Be aware that if you kill the tree by using a systemic herbicide or chopping off roots, you could be sued for the replacement value, which could be thousands for a mature tree.
  
  You could use raised beds in wood frames, but that is expensive. Why not a ground cover of gravel or bark and a bench? A few flowers in large pots.
• Question:-What could be causing my Live Oak tree to turn brown?
  I just moved into a new home in Texas, the builders planted a Live Oak in the front yard. Some of the leaves are turning brown. I have watered the tree every 3 or 4 days. Any ideas what is causing the tree to have brown leaves? Our soil is very poor clay and I have not fertilized it in the 30 days I have lived in the newly constructed house.
  
  Answer:-I have had 5 yrs in the Custom landscape industry and have a couple of recommedations. One. If there is a ring of mulch around the tree anything higher than ground level could be causing difficulties in the production of photosynthesis. It kind of causes the tree to "suffocate" and hinders the xylem-phloem circulation. Two. you may have to dig down to the root ball and see if the "genisuses" that installed the tree remembered to cut away the burlap wrap. And Three. Look around your near by neighbors and see if their trees are in the same predicament (look on and under the leaves for possible spots) could be a fungal/bacteria issues, both of which are easy enough to solve with a tree spray found at most local nurseries.   Answer:-No, you can move it now. Get as much of the dirt around the root ball as possible, add fertilizer to the soil and water well after moving and it should be fine.
• Question:-Why does Spanish moss only grow on hardwoods like live oak?
  Why doesn't it grow as often on pine trees, and never on trees like palm? what features of the live oak make it a good candidate for Spanish moss growth?
  
  Answer:-You have made a very interesting observation that I had never thought of. First, Spanish Moss is the common name for Tillandsia usneoides, a member of the pineapple family. It is not actually a moss but is a flowering plant. Once a year you can find a tiny red flower on the end of the strands. It is an "airplant" and grows on trees as a epiphyte, not a parasite. It just uses the tree for a place to hang and grow and doesn't harm the tree.
  
  I found an article in the American Journal of Botany from 1977 which explains that certain trees like live oak and cypress have an abundance of minerals which they leach out through their leaves. The pine trees do not do this. Studies of Spanish Moss in oak groves and pine forests show that the Spanish Moss is more abundant and has a higher mineral content than the Spanish Moss in the pine forest.

  I have these creame colored fuzz balls on the leaves of my live oak tree. I cut one open and it looked like seeds inside them.
  
  Answer:-They are possibly an oak gall. It is caused by an insect. Usually a type of wasp. Look at the web site below. They don't seem to affect tree health so don't worry about them.

Summer nights people can go out and enjoy the weather. That might have nothing to do with the real reason, but that is my rational. Also, basketball players do have a spoiled lifestyle, and they get the summer months off if you think about it. They probably don't want the winter months off - they get the summer off.

  Answer:-Depends on the type of cichlid and how aggressive they are. Also depends on the filtration. A lot of times it's recommended that you slightly overstock a cichlid tank so that they can't attempt to form territories.
  
  In my 55 gallon tank with 545gph filtration and pristine conditions I have 12 Kenyi cichlids. I have 2 males and 10 females (Or they look female for now. Will reevaluate when they get older). Kenyi's get 6 inches are aggressive and do well with slight overstocking.

  Answer:-I actually have a 75 gallon Malawi tank! If I had the money I would spend it on Texas Holey Rock... it looks absolutely beautiful especially with the fish colors.
  I have an all male tank, keeps the aggression down since there aren't any females to fight over. And one male per species I wouldn't put two greshakei males together...
  I wouldn't add any plants because they cichlids will munch on those, even though there are a couple they won't eat, it's not gauranteed and they will eventually uproot them and redecorate the tank for you.
  I love the yellow labs, they give you that punch of color you want in a tank. I also have some OB Peacock and a red peacock! I am planning on buying a Pseudotropheus Polit, and a Haplochromis Burtoni. I also have a Greshakei and an Azureus. OH my goodness I almost forgot about my Acei, great color too! The more color the better in my opinion and you will get that with an all male tank.
  I would suggest trying to buy some cichlids either online or at a lfs, I would stay away from Petco they don't have a good selection. Petsmart isn't bad...
  Do not buy from any tank that is listed mixed or assorted africans... they are hybrids....
  I would put about 20 in a 75 gallon, overstocking helps keep the aggression down too.

  Answer:-Tube lights are fine but LED lights are cheaper to run and the "bulbs" last almost forever.

  I have a 60 gallon malawi cichlid tank. There are 5 yellow labs and 6 acei cichlids. Each is between 2-4 inches long. They always stay at the bottom of the tank and hid in the rocks. The only time they come out is when it is feeding time. How do I get them to come out more often and to come to higher levels?

  Answer:-Do not take out the rocks... this is their home. Taking it out will make them nervous and susceptible to diseases from the stress. Instead... do the opposite. Add more hiding places and things for them to be interested and hide in. If they have more hiding places it may make them bolder since they have more places to retreat to. Also... if they're new they will hide for a while. If there's a lot of aggression from the fish they will hide.

  I have the same size tank with at least 20 Malawi cichlids. I've got Lombardi's 2 x females, 1 male, a pair of electric yellows, 2 x Pseudotropheus elongatus, Melanochromis "Maingano", Pseudotropheus sp. "Acei" (Msuli) & many beautiful orange blotched peacocks. Your going to love the color of these! My favorite of all is my Sailfin Plecostomus (Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps), he's at least 15cm now & keeps the tank clean for me. They all get on wonderfully together.
  Have fun choosing, just remember to add slowly over the first 4-5 weeks.

  Answer:-Well technically, NYC and just about all of New Jersey fall in the same climate zone as Augusta: Humid Subtropical. This means that the month with the lowest mean temperature may not fall below 26.6 degrees Fahrenheit, and the warmest may not rise above 71.6 degrees Farenheit. ALSO, the Record highs are very similar. In NYC it is 106, as well as in Tallahassee, Florida.
  
  Back to your question, technically the only difference between the weather is that average temperatures are less than in Augusta, but if a powerful cold front comes through, temperatures will be similar (like right now.) I am from NJ, and I'll tell ya, nobody thinks 30 degrees is warm! Of course 50 degrees is more comfortable!

  Answer:-seriously, the weather is very unpredictable. we get our first snow in about september, and then the last one in may. but then mixed in with all the snow in the winter is 70 degree days in january. in the summer (especially july) it rains daily at about 3:00 pm with thunder and lightning. it's not humid at all (people complain if it gets above 25% humidity). but yes, there is a very drastic change from day to night. even if it gets to 90 degrees during the day, it'll drop at least to 60 at night.
  some other info: not much crime. district 20, 38, and 12 schools are great! 11 and 49 are overcrowded and have some sub-standard schools and teachers. i'm not sure which part you're coming to so i can't really tell you anything about a specific school... but i've lived here for half my life so anything else you want to know just ask!

  Answer:-It depends where you are in Colorado and the type of duck. Some of the mountain towns (e.g., Aspen or Frasier) are too cold, but ducks (mostly mallards) live year round in other parts of the state (e.g., Denver or Colorado Springs).

  Answer:-If I can go from Texas to South Korea...I think you'll be fine lol. Colorado does get cold in the winter time, they are not humid ever, usually, depends on which part of Colorado you go to, the eastern portions can get a dry line that brings dew points to the 50's, but no where near the 60's and 70's you are used too. Denver is pleasant in the summer, only a few days reach 100, and it's a pleasant dry heat. If you are in the mountains, expect cool summers, 80's usually, 40's for lows. Winter's good luck anywhere in Colorado, record lows have dipped all the way down to -60 before...I've never felt that, but if you spit, it will be a ball of ice before it hits the ground.

  For anyone who has made this winter time drive (or something similar), are the weather conditions severe? Are the raods at least fit for driving? I would hate to spend 5 days getting back in winter conditions when it took 2 for me to make the drive during the summer. I'll be driving to CO for Christmas.
  
  Answer:-I made it last January, most of the drive is on the plains or in areas that don't get much snow. It shouldn't be that hard unless there's a freak storm. Just avoid I-70, as it goes right through the Rockies and closes at Vail pass all the time

That is a slight exaggeration, but it often changes abruptly especially in the summer when we have frequent rain, hail and sometimes even show in the afternoons after a morning of beautiful sunny weather.
  
  Fronts can move across the plains or down from the mountains very quickly and meteorologists always say forecasting is challenging at best. They put the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder for a reason and it wasn't the dull boring weather.
