I love learning new words. The other day I found out what apostasy means and was very excited when I learned this because it so resolutely defines my religious views in the past four years. But I was wondering, what do these close-sounding words mean? For instance how is apostle, apocalypse, apostasy mean when you break them down? All of them start with "apo". What does this mean in its original (latin or greek or whatever)? Thanks!
Answer:-Apo (Alpha, pi, omicron) means from. In Greek, what we translate as Apocalypse means to reveal or uncover, what we translate apostasy means defection (read: heresy), and the word we translate Apostle also means messenger. I have yet to take a Greek class, so I don't know the significance of the word 'Apo' at the beginning, but in all of them it is hyphened off. I don't think that they are as connected as you think they are; there are lots of Greek words in the New Testament with this three letter prefix. - Question:-What is the penalty for apostasy in Islam?

Answer:-The penalty for apostasy in Islam is death.
Qur'an (4:89) - "They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them"
Qur'an (9:11-12) - "But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then are they your brethren in religion. We detail Our revelations for a people who have knowledge. And if they break their pledges after their treaty (hath been made with you) and assail your religion, then fight the heads of disbelief - Lo! they have no binding oaths - in order that they may desist." This verse is speaking of infidels (ie. "slay the infidels wherever you find them" 9:5) who obviously became Muslim to escape the sword, but the Hadith make no distinction of how a Muslim came to be a Muslim. Apostasy is always punished by death.
Bukhari (52:260) - "...The Prophet said, 'If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him.' "
Bukhari (83:37) - "Allah's Apostle never killed anyone except in one of the following three situations: (1) A person who killed somebody unjustly, was killed (in Qisas,) (2) a married person who committed illegal sexual intercourse and (3) a man who fought against Allah and His Apostle and deserted Islam and became an apostate."
Bukhari (84:57) - "[In the words of] Allah's Apostle, 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'"
Bukhari (89:271) - A man who embraces Islam, then reverts to Judaism is to be killed according to "the verdict of Allah and his apostle."
Bukhari (84:58) - "There was a fettered man beside Abu Muisa. Mu'adh asked, 'Who is this (man)?' Abu Muisa said, 'He was a Jew and became a Muslim and then reverted back to Judaism.' Then Abu Muisa requested Mu'adh to sit down but Mu'adh said, 'I will not sit down till he has been killed. This is the judgment of Allah and His Apostle (for such cases) and repeated it thrice.' Then Abu Musa ordered that the man be killed, and he was killed. Abu Musa added, 'Then we discussed the night prayers'"
Bukhari (84:64-65) - "Allah's Apostle: 'During the last days there will appear some young foolish people who will say the best words but their faith will not go beyond their throats (i.e. they will have no faith) and will go out from (leave) their religion as an arrow goes out of the game. So, wherever you find them, kill them, for whoever kills them shall have reward on the Day of Resurrection.'"
Abu Dawud (4346) - "Was not there a wise man among you who would stand up to him when he saw that I had withheld my hand from accepting his allegiance, and kill him?" Muhammad is chastising his companions for allowing an apostate to "repent" under duress. (The person in question was Muhammad's former scribe who left him after doubting the authenticity of divine "revelations" upon finding out that he could suggest grammatical changes. He was brought back to Muhammad after having been captured in Medina).
Reliance of the Traveller (Islamic Law) o8.1 - "When a person who has reached puberty and is sane voluntarily apostatizes from Islam, he deserves to be killed." (o8.4 affirms that there is no penalty for killing an apostate). - Question:-What is the definition of blasphemy in Islam? What is the definition of apostasy?
Both are things that will get a person killed in Muslim countries. My impression from what I have heard is that blasphemy is saying anything negative about Islam, and apostasy is choosing to have different religious beliefs from what your parents taught you.

Answer:-Why does it matter what my relationship is to the person? Even in a book of Socrates, the person he was talking to said what does it matter if the person I am bringing to court is my own father. Islam tells us even if my own mother murdered someone and someone else was going to die for her deed, I should (and I completely agree) that I should say no it is my mother that did it.

For example, I am an atheist who used to be a Christian. Leaving Christianity is blasphemy against the holy spirit, so why do people try to win people like me "back into to the fold". The parable of the lost sheep is also moot since the lost sheep did the unforgivable sin and left Jesus, too.

I guess I am guilty of one or both of them, since I converted to Buddhism some years ago. But I have heard these words used interchangeably. I am not bashing Christianity, and please limit the atheist hate speech (going either way). Just wondering.

Answer:-Apostates know the truth but not only turn their back on the good news but are commited to keeping others away from the true knowledge of God and the Christ. Often using false stories against the followers of truth, persecution, intimidation and ridicule.
You will notice apostates have a common theme to tear down when taking their opposition against true Christians and teachings. True Christians build up yet and teach hope and love. Apostates offer no hope only condemnation and are harsh people.

We are World's biggest and strongest nation, all we need is to identify and explore our own selves.
Our victory is with our knowledge, our creativity, our literacy...And nothing else.

Brother Hafez gave some interesting stats but I humbly disagree with his reasoning.
The society that Rasool Allah (saw) established in Madina was called the best ever seen by the world. The Sahaba (ra) of Rasool Allah (saw) were called the best generation ever (Allah (saw) praised them). They provided the base upon which the best and most powerful state and system the world had ever seen was established. Yet I don’t remember reading about any MIT (Madina Institute of Technology) in Madina. None of them received any worldly awards or accolades.
Now let’s look at the highly educated and powerful Jews. Despite of all there power and knowledge they are dependent upon the charity of the US and the west to survive. The tiny Jewish state is there for 60 years and rather then progressing, everyday they are getting closer to the end. May Allah (swt) save us from this type of power.
Allah (saw) said “The victory is for the believers”; the ayah does not say “the victory is for the scientists, engineers and businessmen”.
So obviously the earlier generations understood something that we are missing and that is why the victory is evading us. Allah (swt) knows the best.
May Allah (swt) allow us to see the truth.
