mars rover

  • Question:-Mars Rover is still running and we drive to work using a century old combustion engine, WHY?
Given, the Mars Rover is still running on solar panels, giving off 0 emissions, a technological marvel and is 36 million miles away. The primary form of transportation on earth is the century old combustion engine, spewing off emissions. Regardless as to whether the earth or humanity will succumb to the effects of our dirty habits, why do we allow this to happen?
Did you know that we get enough energy from the sun in about 2 hours to provide all of the worlds energy needs?
The point is, we have the technology, Mars Rover, Nuclear powered subs, Cern, but we cruise around in vehicles with combustion engines.

Answer:-I brought up the same question at work, the rover has been going for a long time and I'm not sure but I don't think there are any gas stations on mars!
People need to stop using gas and force a change, as long as the oil companies make billions per quarter they will continue to pay everyone off so they can continue to use gas.

Check out the movie, who killed the electric car. it's an eye opening experience.
  • Question:-Why is Mars rover Opprotunity making fast progress toward a destination of its own?
Why is it that mars rover spirit has reached a safe sit for the martian winter, while its twin, opportunity, is making fast progress toward a destination of is own?

Answer:-Spirit has been mired in a sand trap for six months and may be stuck for good:

    http://blogs.usatoday.com/sciencefair/2009/11/nasa-unveils-plan-to-free-sandtrapped-mars-rover.html

Opportunity is continuing it's two-year drive to Endeavour crater.
  • Question:-Can you download the Mars Rover pictures made public in bulk?
Is there any place that you can download all the mars land rover pictures that were made public in bulk? Perhaps a torrent or otherwise from the Nasa archives?
    Thanks!

Answer:-You could wait for a random response from some millions of users who may or may not know or even see your question or you could ask the webmaster for the NASA site. Which one do you think is going to get you the best and quickest answer?
  • Question:-How do we recieve a signals from a rover on Mars?
I assume the Mars rover has a small antenna with a low power transmitter. If this is the case how does that signal get reicieved all the way on earth? Is there some sort of satellite relay system? It seems to me that it would be difficult to discern the signal from all the random noise. Maybe some sort of special encoding is used on the signal. I don't know....does anyone know the answer?

Answer:-As far as i know both Rovers do only have a UHF transmitter making them incapable sending something directly to earth.

Instead they relay(ed) data through Mars Odyssey, Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Express and possibly the new Reconaissance Orbiter.

if Transmitter Power is limited it needs large antennas to even receive signals from the satellites around mars, due to the fact that it could be on the other side of the sun, from time to time.
Distance and lack of power causing effects of course. So therefore they switch to lower transmission speeds, and use algorithms to be able to reconstruct lost bits in the stream.

This was all considered on planning, so it was decided not to have the rovers transmit directly.
Instead having redundant orbiters to relay which have no problems with sand on their solar-panels.
  • Question:-mars rover?
    pictures

Answer:-Maybe this is what you need:

  • Question:-When will be the mars rover sent to the mars?
Do we know exact date of rover to mars?
Edward, if there are rovers on the mars' surface, then why are there no videos of good quality of mars inside the atmosphere? I really wish to see how mars looks inside with a good quality video which is colored, not black and white...

Answer:-Mars already has two rovers, "Spirit" and "Opportunity". They have been operating on Mars' surface for about seven years, although Spirit may have recently gotten stuck in a cold location and poorly exposed to the Sun, and, subsequently, didn't get enough solar power to survive the last Martian winter.

The next Mars rover, named "Curiosity", is scheduled for launch November 25, 2011.
  • Question:-Will it be a lot more expensive (than the price of the mars rover) for NASA to send a rover?
    (like the mars rover)
to Planet Jupiter's moon Europa to do some preliminary testing for possible life on Europa?

Answer:-Yes, a Jovian Rover would have to be much tougher due to Jupiter's huge gravity and turbulent atmosphere. It would have to avoid being sucked into its atmosphere, on approach to Europa and would require lots of fuel. Then there is the electronic magnetic interpherence as most radioactive particles are drawn toward toward it so any electronic equipment would have to be well shielded.
  • Question:-How did the Mars Rover get to Mars?
Im just curious on how the Mars Rover got to Mars after it left Earth and how it knew which direction to go exactly for the 7 month period it was in space, cause outer space is a big place. Lol
And how did it get to Mars since there is no control in space and you cant really move anywhere since theres no gravity, did it just float to Mars or was it powered by a rocket the entire time?

    Answer:-
  • Question:-The Mars rover was deployed on the surface of Mars in July 1997.?
The Mars rover was deployed on the surface of Mars in July 1997. At one point during its subsequent mission, radio signals took about 18 min to travel from Earth to the rover. How far was Mars from the from Earth at that time?

Answer:-18 light minutes. (Just enter it into google for the conversion of units you want. I'll give you a hint, it's more than 300million KM (16 light minutes would be that... double the distance to the Sun).
  • Question:-How was the mars rover balloon lander thing able to right itself after it deflates?
i watched nasa sim of it and after the balloons deflate the rover comes out and voild --its right side up.

    ??
    sposed to say --"voila!"
injanier --i didnt see the uprighting part in wiki --thanks!

Answer:-The capsule that held the rover was a tetrahedron - four triangular sides, one of which was the base. A sensor on the lander figured out which face was down. If it wasn't the base, it opened the side that was facing down, which would flip the lander onto its base. Then the other sides open up and the rover can roll out.

google x

  • Question:-How much is a google x a google?
I know a google is 100 0's but I'm to tired and lazy to do the math.

    Answer:-Doogle or twoogle...take your pick !
  • Question:-Google earth X! How do i get rid of this x on my google earth?
There is a great big red x covering all of europe from russia to ireland, down to africa on my google earth! i would really like to get rid of it but cant seem to find a way how... any suggestions?
oh and its been this way ever since... by accident... i imported a house from sketch up..... oh and its not from clouds... i don't have clouds layer... only a weather layer and thats not on... but thank you anyway!

Answer:-I would suggest turning off all layers. Then turning them back on one by one as to pinpoint the problem.
  • Question:-How do I create a formula in Google Docs (spreadsheet) that shows 0 if X=<0?
I´m trying to create a spreadsheet in Google Docs that calculates a cost when the sum is more then zero. Since the cost cannot be negative I need a formula that works in Google Spreadsheets, when x is lower then zero, then show zero.

Answer:-You are on the right track - the IF statement.

    =IF ( test, then_true, otherwise_value )

=IF ( Cell <= 0, 0, Cell ) -- if the cell is less than or equal to zero, show zero, otherwise use the value in the cell.

    The function's three arguments are:

test - a value or expression that is tested to see if it is true or false.
then_true - the operation that is carried out if the test is true.
otherwise_value - the operation that is carried out if the test is false.

Here's a more complete description, and links to other useful functions.

    I hope this helps.
  • Question:-Does google (gmail) automatically log AIM conversations? Isn't there a google x or some site that stores 'em?
When I chat with friends, sometimes their sn automatically IMs me about a google x or gmail x or some sort of combo of the two that stores/logs the convo. Anyone know what I'm talking about because I'd like to be able to see my logs. Thanks!

Answer:-Yeah I know what you mean, cause it does do that. Like my gmail chat area says, you are automatically logged in to AIM. But now it doesn't do that anymore... Well at least it doesn't for like two days now... I don't know what is up?
  • Question:-What do the red x's mean on google earth?
I just recently opened up google earth to look around and a bunch of red x's appeared over USA. I can't go down and look at the places covered by the X. It's almost like a shield covering certain areas. Does anyone else see this? What is going on?

  • Question:-Why do I see I giant X in Google Earth?
There's a huge red X in a box over Europe, Asia, and Africa before it was over the entire Pacific ocean.

What's wrong and how do I fix it?

Answer:-seems like google (and a few other big companies/sites) are going down, there doing somethink to there servers i guess. it should fix itself in a few hours.
  • Question:-Where can I find X-rays images to compare with mines other than the regular google,yahoo/search, any website ?
Where can I find X-rays images to compare with mines other than google/search, any website ?

Hi. I just recently had done a bunch of x-rays on my back, neck, feet, ankles, and knees, because I was diagnose with degenerative arthrosis aka. Osteoarthritis and I have an appointment 2 months from now with the rheumatologist to check the results, but I have the X-rays with me and I cant wait and want to compare them now with similar x-rays just for my personal satisfaction and so I know what to expect 2 months from now. If you know where I can find x-rays images other than the regular search, can you please tell me. Maybe a website that has complete x-rays normals or ill people, whatever. I just want to compare them with mine so I get an idea of how bd Im I. Thank You.....

Answer:-Don't take this the wrong way, but unless you're trained to read x-rays, you're more likely to guess wrong about the films than guess correctly.
  • Question:-How do you delete the history off of the Google website on a Mac OS X?
I like to keep my computer organized and I don't like it when I have too much history on my searches. I'm not talking about the Google search on top of the url on Safari, but the actual Google website. How do you delete the history? Thank you very much.

    Answer:-Safari Menu > Preferences > Autofill > Other Forms > Edit Button

Find the "google.com" entry. Highlight it. Click "Remove" Button. Click "Done".

    Hope this helps.

Answer:-Putting X-rays online would be a breach of medical confidentiality agreements and such and can hold companies liable for posting that type of information on the Internet. So I haven't seen any sites doing this because they don't want to take the risk of being sued.

rock center

  • Question:-I trying to find pictures of rock/flower center pieces to accent the front lawn?
We are removing our current lawn(front yard) and we want to show a beautiful center peice, such as, a rock/flower center piece garden, with grass. The backyard will be golf turf for my husband to use for putting his golf balls.

Answer:-I wasn't able to find any truly spectacular examples but the picture at http://www.cottageliving.com/cottage/gardens/article/0,21135,1092887,00.html
should give you some idea of the design principles for a circular flower bed. The idea is to create visual interest by using symmetry and by varying the height of the design elements. The centre should be something of height -- whether it is a fountain, a small tree, or a very large rock. It is then surrounded by circular plantings of medium height plants, followed by the lowest plants along the edges. You may want to vary the bloom times of the plantings that form your circles within the design -- tulips for spring closest to the centre, followed by progressively later blooming plants (or vice versa). For real punch, you can pick colours for each layer that are opposite each other on the colour wheel -- orange alternating with purple, or red alternating with blue. For something more harmonious, pick colours beside each other the colour wheel -- soft pinks and blues, for example.
Annuals will give you a longer bloom time, so are more often used for circular flower beds than perennials. If you live in a hot dry part of the country, then your design might feature more of the desert species, arranged and layered in the same way I've described above.
  • Question:-When is the 2009 Xmas tree lighting at Rock Center in NYC?
What date and time does the 2009 Xmas tree lighting take place at Rockefeller Center? Also anyone know who is performing this year?

Answer:-"The live celebration of the 77th tree lighting will take place on Wednesday, December 2, 2009. Special guests are to be announced.

When: Wednesday, December 2, 2009 from 7PM-9PM (tree is lit at 8:55PM)"
  • Question:-What shoes should I wear at an indoor rock climbing center? Is it worth 5 dollars to rent climbing shoes?

Answer:-It depends, if you're a beginner you probably won't need them as most easy-moderate routes have decent footholds. You might want to continue climbing in trainers for a while and when you've improved to around level 5-6 try renting a pair. You'll probably find them uncomfortable like most people but try a hard climb. You should find it a bit easier. Then if you like them I would suggest buying a pair. If your climbing centre has a shop like mine, they should be happy to look at how you climb and suggest shoes to suit you best.
    Happy Climbing!
  • Question:-how much money does the plasma center in little rock AR pay for plasma blood?
i need to know how much little rock pays before i drive all the way over there and waste my gas on just $20 or $25 dollars? can someone please help me?

Answer:-I would suggest that before you look at how much you will be paid to donate, you should think of the impact it may have on someones life. If one of your family needed plasma or blood would you appreciate there being a delay because someone was too worried about wasting a little petrol??

In australia we do not get paid to donate plasma, we dontate because we want to help.

I think you should donate your plasma and give anything you make back to the collection centre.
  • Question:-Spreading center volcanism is associated with which rock type?
Also, what causes rocks to melt in regions of spreading-center volcanism?

Answer:-When I think of spreading centers, I think of Mid-ocean Ridges in the ocean, so just think of what makes up the sea floor... Basalt.

And an eruption occurs usually occurs when the sea floor is spread apart thin enough to allow magma to push through, and a combination of the addition of water and the lowering of pressure as the magma rises keeps the magma liquid and allows it to flow as lava to the surface.
  • Question:-Why is it that even though the center of the Earth is molten rock, that everything around it is solid?
We have all been told that the center of the Earth is molten rock, but since it is at such high temperature then why isn't everything else just melted? The same way that even though the surface of venus is between 400 degrees F and 740 K (hot enough to melt lead) why isn't the planet just molten rock?

Answer:-Everybody seems to have missed one little thing. The Earth's core isn't molten rock. It's molten iron. Whether or not something is molten depends on pressure and temperature. The temperature at the inner core is high enough to overcome the pressure that tries to keep it solid.
  • Question:-if a rock is dropped through a hole to the center of the earth, will it gain or lose weight by the time it?
if a rock is dropped through a hole to the center of the earth, will it gain or lose weight by the time it reaches the center? I know the mass will remain unchanged. Thanks!

Answer:-It will lose weight as it descends into the earth.

The inverse square relationship of gravity and distance only applies to point masses. With spherical masses, it is accurate to consider them as point sources as long as the distance between the objects is greater than their radii.

Using calculus, it is provable that inside of a spherical shell, the force exerted by gravity is zero. So for the object inside of the earth, the mass of the earth beyond the distance between the two centers of mass can be neglected in calculating the force on the object.

Intuitively, you can probably grasp this by imagining an object at the earth's center. Gravity will pull on it equally in all directions, thus having a net force of zero.
  • Question:-if a syncline were worn away would you find the oldest rock at the center or edge?
I need help with my homework and I have to find it on the internet but I can't find it anywhere! HELP! (please)

    Answer:-Hi. At the edge. http://www.answers.com/syncline?cat=technology&gwp=13

  • Question:-How painful is it to be front and center at a rock concert?
    Crowdsurfers, mosh pits, etc.

    Answer:-Yeahh kinda lol.
Especially if the singer comes down by you... Fun but kinda hard to breath lol

oh and by the way I like your picture
    Silverstein <3 lol
