It was said that Otto I defeated the Hungarians due to its power. There is a book called The Spear of Destiny that I have seen in the New Age section of Borders. You can also order it from Amazon. Hitler was fascinated by the occult and thought this relic could help him win the war. The lance is mentioned only in the Gospel of John (19:31–37) and not in any of the Synoptic Gospels. The gospel states that the Romans planned to break Jesus' legs, a practice known as crurifragium, which was a method of hastening the death during a crucifixion. Just before they did so, they realized he was already dead and that there was no reason to break his legs. To make sure he was dead, a soldier (extra-Biblical tradition gives this man the name Longinus) stabbed him in the side.

A mitred Adhémar de Monteil carrying one of the instances of the Holy Lance in one of the battles of the First CrusadeNo actual lance is known until the pilgrim St. Antoninus of Piacenza (AD 570), describing the holy places of Jerusalem, says that he saw in the Basilica of Mount Zion "the crown of thorns with which Our Lord was crowned and the lance with which He was struck in the side". A mention of the lance also occurs in the so-called Breviarius at the church of the Holy Sepulchre. The presence in Jerusalem of this important relic is attested by Cassiodorus (c. 485 - c. 585)[2] as well as by Gregory of Tours (c. 538 – 594), who had not actually been to Jerusalem.
In 615 Jerusalem and its relics were captured by the Persian forces of King Khosrau II (Chosroes II). According to the Chronicon Paschale, the point of the lance, which had been broken off, was given in the same year to Nicetas, who took it to Constantinople and deposited it in the church of Hagia Sophia. This point of the lance, which was now set in an "ycona", or icon in 1244 was sold by Baldwin II of Constantinople to Louis IX of France, and it was enshrined with the Crown of Thorns in the Sainte Chapelle in Paris. During the French Revolution these relics were removed to the Bibliotheque Nationale but subsequently disappeared. (The present "Crown of Thorns" is a wreath of rushes.)
As for the larger portion of the lance, Arculpus claimed he saw it at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre around 670 in Jerusalem, but there is otherwise no mention of it after the sack in 615. Some claim that the larger relic had been conveyed to Constantinople sometime during the 8th century, possibly at the same time as the Crown of Thorns. At any rate, its presence at Constantinople seems to be clearly attested by various pilgrims, particularly Russians, and, though it was deposited in various churches in succession, it seems possible to trace it and distinguish it from the relic of the point. Sir John Mandeville declared in 1357 that he had seen the blade of the Holy Lance both at Paris and at Constantinople, and that the latter was a much larger relic than the former.
Whatever the Constantinople relic was, it fell into the hands of the Turks, and in 1492, under circumstances minutely described in Pastor's History of the Popes, the Sultan Bajazet sent it to Innocent VIII to encourage the pope to continue to keep his brother Zizim (Cem) prisoner. At this time great doubts as to its authenticity were felt at Rome, as Johann Burchard records,[3] because of the presence of other rival lances in Paris (the point that had been separated from the lance), Nuremberg (see "Vienna lance" below), and Armenia (see "Etschmiadzin lance" below). In the mid 1700s Benedict XIV states that he obtained from Paris an exact drawing of the point of the lance, and that in comparing it with the larger relic in St. Peter's he was satisfied that the two had originally formed one blade.[4] This relic has never since left Rome, where it is preserved under the dome of Saint Peter's Basilica, although the Roman Catholic Church makes no claim as to its authenticity.

The lance currently in Echmiadzin, Armenia, was discovered during the First Crusade. In 1098 the crusader Peter Bartholomew reported that he had a vision in which St. Andrew told him that the Holy Lance was buried in St. Peter's Cathedral in Antioch. After much digging in the cathedral, a lance was discovered. This was considered a miracle by the crusaders who were able to rout the Muslim army besieging the city and decisively capture Antioch. Some Medieval scholars (e.g. Raynaldi and the Bollandists) believed that this lance afterwards fell into the hands of the Turks and was in fact the lance that Bajazet sent to Pope Innocent and is now in the Vatican.[citation needed]

The inscription on the Holy LanceThe Holy Roman Emperors had a lance of their own, attested from the time of Otto I (912-973). In 1000 Otto III gave Boleslaw I of Poland a replica of the Lance at the Congress of Gniezno. In 1084 Henry IV had a silver band with the inscription "Nail of Our Lord" added to it. This was based on the belief that this was the lance of Constantine the Great which enshrined a nail used for the Crucifixion. In 1273 it was first used in the coronation ceremony. Around 1350 Charles IV had a golden sleeve put over the silver one, inscribed "Lancea et clavus Domini" (Lance and nail of the Lord). In 1424 Sigismund had a collection of relics, including the lance, moved from his capital in Prague to his birth place, Nuremberg, and decreed them to be kept there forever. This collection was called the Reichskleinodien or Imperial Regalia.
When the French Revolutionary army approached Nuremberg in the spring of 1796 the city councilors decided to remove the Reichskleinodien to Vienna, Austria, for safe keeping. The collection was entrusted to one "Baron von Hügel", who promised to return the objects as soon as peace had been restored and the safety of the collection assured[citation needed]. However, the Holy Roman Empire was officially dissolved in 1806 and von Hügel took advantage of the confusion over who was the rightful owner and sold the entire collection, including the lance, to the Habsburgs[citation needed]. When the city councilors discovered this they asked for the Reichskleinodien back but were refused. As part of the imperial regalia it was kept in the Schatzkammer (Imperial treasury) in Vienna and was known as the lance of Saint Maurice.
During the Anschluss, when Austria was annexed to Germany, Adolf Hitler took the lance. It was returned to Austria by American General George S. Patton after World War II and was temporarily stored in the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Currently the Spear is held in the Schatzkammer (Imperial treasury).
Dr. Robert Feather, an English metallurgist and technical engineering writer, tested the lance in January of 2003.[5] He was given unprecedented permission not only to examine the lance in a laboratory environment, but was also allowed to remove the delicate bands of gold and silver that hold it together. In the opinion of Feather and other academic experts, the likeliest date of the spearhead is the 7th century - only slightly earlier than the Museum's own estimate.

Another lance has been preserved at Krakow, Poland, since at least the 1200s. However, German records indicate that it was a copy of the Vienna lance. Emperor Henry II had it made with a small sliver of the original lance. Another copy was given to the Hungarian king at the same time.
The story told by William of Malmesbury of the giving of the Holy Lance to King Athelstan of England by Hugh Capet seems to be due to a misconception.

The desire for Australians to become a republic is as difficult to articulate to mainly WASPish majority living in Australia. People are too well entrenched with traditions and history.
The greatest threat to mainly WASPS, and protestant Pacific Islanders, is the fear of Filipino Catholics in the region. Covenant with Black America moderated by Tavis Smiley, had a Democratic debate with ALL of the Democratic nominees, televised on June 28 at Howard University. YES they all showed up and I heard their position and plans for many issues surrounding hard working Americans. However, The Republican debate is set for September 27 at Morgan State University and these alleged front runners have declined to participate: Rudy Guiliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney & Fred Thompson.
This is ONE more reason for Republicans NOT to get my VOTE....they are not concerned with the issues involving not just African Americans, but People of Color in general and the hard working people who carry this country. Do Republicans believe they can continute to ignore the People and push their own agendas - and we won't push back? Any intelligent comments out there?
The only way for Republicans & Democrats to HEAR the PEOPLE is to address those who can't afford to pay $1000 per plate fund raisers. It appears Covenany with Black America is the only venue I've seen offering debates for both parties to address issues surrounding the common American. I'm not making this a race thing - you assume I am - I can but won't go there......so have you seen any Republicans speak to a predominately black, hispanic, native american or asian crowd? Even in the media? I haven't seen any other scheduled debates (Fox or otherwise) that was turned down by either party so if you know of any, please advise and I will definitely check it out.....Oh wait - our Hispanic community tried to organize a debate and got no response so they cancelled. its very odd that when the Dems were having their debate, everyone was cheering like crazy when the candidates were saying they will bring the troops home, yet when he suggested it, he was booed, and Mccain compared him to Hitler!!!!

1.Mike Huckabee - witty, well-prepared, and compassionate and would unite us! He is the man for the job! Death penalty skate, but I understand why!
2.John McCain - affirmed that he is the a well respected veteran and would Lead well.
3.Mitt Romney - bickering with Rudy made him look petty; comments on torture made him seem wise and made McCain seem cold and on the attack! Comments on Confederate flag non-issue.
4.Ron Paul - didn't respond well to McCain's attacks; rant about North American Union conspiracy made him seem too extreme.
5.Duncan Hunter – Faired well, not much time, but all answers were good! He would be a great VEEP to Huckabee!
6.Tom Tancredo – Good on one issue: Immigration, but he ranks high on my candidate calculator, so candidate for VEEP too!
7.Fred Thompson - not heard from very much, seemed poorly prepared and confused. Not very articulate and disappointing. Sounded like he was trying out for VEEP.

I recently discovered Eric Church's most recent two albums and LOVE them. I love how different his sound is, almost like a cross between rock band and Dirt Band. It is not as processed and "pop" sounding as other recent country artists like many other male country artists.
When you search "similar artists to Eric Church" it seems that any other male country artist is rated to be "super similar" to him only because they are modern country artists but actually sound nothing the same.
Any suggestions? not interested in Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, etc (still love these guys but its not the sound I am looking for) I want more feeling in the music.

The real story of the song is about two brothers; one is going the right direction and the other is headed down the wrong path. The good brother is trying to bring the other one back home. Travis Tritt had it right when he said "Country Aint Country No More" Most artists today have strayed from traditional country music and have crossed the line into the Pop Genre. While this can be good with artists like Tayor Swift getting the younger crowds feet wet and pulling them to CMT and Country radio, where is the country music? Where is the wholesome music about real life that has a positive message? Where are the songs about rural country life that I can relate to?
Answer:-We can only hope but sadly Jamey is not getting the public recognition that he deserves and in my opinion is the only artist today that I feel harkens back to the day of Waylon. His latest album is fantastic and when I bought it, it renewed my faith in the ability to hear traditional music being produced today. I think for traditonal country lovers though, we have to search the "Americana" and "independant" labels to find the music that falls into this category.
Sadly, Nashville does hold the market in what listeners hear over general radio stations and it is more about the business and sales than it is about the music. 1.Mike Huckabee - witty, well-prepared, and compassionate and would unite us! He is the man for the job! Death penalty skate, but I understand why!
2.John McCain - affirmed that he is the a well respected veteran and would Lead well.
3.Mitt Romney - bickering with Rudy made him look petty; comments on torture made him seem wise and made McCain seem cold and on the attack! Comments on Confederate flag non-issue.
4.Ron Paul - didn't respond well to McCain's attacks; rant about North American Union conspiracy made him seem too extreme.
5.Duncan Hunter – Faired well, not much time, but all answers were good! He would be a great VEEP to Huckabee!
6.Tom Tancredo – Good on one issue: Immigration, but he ranks high on my candidate calculator, so candidate for VEEP too!
7.Fred Thompson - not heard from very much, seemed poorly prepared and confused. Not very articulate and disappointing. Sounded like he was trying out for VEEP.

Answer:-My guess, and it is only a guess, is that we have destroyed its habitat by draining and filling marshes and turned productive fields of grass to agricultural crops that pay a greater return. This is my favorite comment on this poem. I think that if your teacher wants you to analyze "deeper meanings," you should do two things:
Look at the poem in lines, not in the prose paragraphs you've reduced it to. This kinda slows it down, and lets you look at each image, one at a time, and to hear the rhymes and half rhymes.

For instance, the rising of the sun proceeds from quiet, gradual images to quick, lively ones: [one] ribbon at a time, [church] steeples swimming in amethyst, squirrels running, hills [like ladies] untying their bonnets [to free their glistening locks of hair--then what?], bobolinks beginning [to sing maybe, or what?]. Then the speaker realizing and saying softly to herself, as if in surprise, Why, look it's suddenly daylight! To me all this suggests pleasant things like, maybe, awakening, spring, growing from childhood to young adulthood, and the beginning of so many pleasant things, like falling in love. It happens gradually, then all of a sudden you notice it's happened.
What about the sunset? a purple stile [steps to climb, over a fence or a wall, shadow of deep purple], little children dressed in bright yellow climbing to the other side, a dominie [clergyman] gently putting up the bars [drawing the shutters or curtains] [like a shepherd] leading the flock away. To me all this suggests pleasant things, but quiet, thoughtful things, like sleep, autumn fading into winter, ageing, calming down, rest and peace [OK, death, if you insist, not a traumatic, grievous death, but a slow peaceful "fading away"]. Notice that the speaker isn't conscious of this process, "I know not," maybe because it hasn't happened yet or when one is asleep, at rest, beyond life, consciousness is not the same.
The important question is not What does This Poem Mean? but rather, what does this little poem mean to you personally, and why?

But to halfway answer your question... in most of the NeoPagan religions, worshipping outside is preferable to worshipping inside, because when we worship outside we are immersed in the Divine-in-nature.
One of the most powerful services I ever attended was out in the woods, beside one of the largest lakes in North America, during a full-out thunderstorm. Standing there in the grove with the sweet earth beneath my feet and my face upturned to the pouring rain, I felt utterly embraced and enfolded by the presence of the God and the Goddess.

Notice that all the references to how the speaker keeps the sabbath refer to nature. All the references to how "some" do it refer to the formal rituals of the church.
Dickinson was a highly independent thinker, and it is people like her who would agree that one can feel the presence of God when out in his creation. Those who would disagree are people who feel that church is the only proper place for prayer or religious thought--conventional thinkers, in other words.

crystal cathedral
- Question:-Are front row seats good for the Glory of Christmas at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove?
I want to purchase tickets to see the Glory of Christmas at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, my first instinct is to get front row seats as I will have a 6 and 8 year old with me and I want them to be able to see but does anyone have any advice about the front row? good or bad seats?
