earthquake today

  • Question:-EARTHQUAKE TODAY!!...?
was there an earthquake today because my windows where shakingg:/

if it did happen "quakeprediction" was saying the thruth!!!!

Answer:-There was a mag 2.7 near the Salton Sea yesterday, which is the only quake in the last day or so meeting quakeprediction.com criteria. Unfortunately, there are so many small quakes in California that forecasting one, especially in an active fault zone, is meaningless in the long run. Also, it looks like quakeprediction.com is hedging their bets. Looking at the percentages for the Bay Area, it looks like they're predicting a swarm of quakes, with a 90% or better chance for a quake on five days in a row. If one quake does hit in the next week, that's not just a successful "prediction," it's also four unsuccessful predictions.

Link is to the USGS map of recent quakes in California. New quakes are plotted within a few minutes. If what you felt was an earthquake, it will be on the map.
  • Question:-Earthquake today !?
Did any of you heard about the earthquake in southern california, man i was sooo fuken scare when it happen. ( i live in los angeles)

Answer:-Yes. But I don't live in LA. I found out when I looked at this link. I bet may of you guys were afraid. Be careful if you plan on going to the beach because of after effects. It could be possible a tsunami could hit.

  • Question:-What caused the earthquake in Chicago today?
There was a mild earthquake today 2/10/2010.
The earthquake was felt around 4am and it was a 3.8 magnitude! Hard to believe this could happen in Chicago.

Answer:-Maybe it has some connection with the New Madrid fault.

  • Question:-Did the earthquake today hit Georgia and how bad was the damage?
Hi, does anyone know if the earthquake today hit the state of Georgia? Like, was it affected? And how bad is the damage in Georgia? I really am concerned about this because my brother's best friend is visiting Georgia right now, and my brother hasn't contacted him yet. Please let me know. Thanks!

Answer:-I'm not sure if it went that far, but the news said that it hit 22 states. Or rather, the tremors could be felt in 22 states. The worse hit were D.C. and Virginia where the Epicenter is. Call your brother back to see what he's found out, that's your best bet. I think your friend will be fine.
  • Question:-Is there suppose to be an earthquake today at 2pm?
I heard that there is gonna be a big earthquake today since "the world is ending" has any of you heard about this earthquake thing?? Is it really true?

    Answer:-
  • Question:-Do you think the earthquake today is linked to Obama?
There was an earthquake today. It originated in Chiacgo, home of Barry and Michael Osama. In the Bible it states that with the arrival of the antichrist there will be many earthquakes, floods and volcanoes. Maybe this the start of that. Maybe it is God trying to make those blind and deaf Bama supporters really look and listen to what his true colors are. He is a racist, muslim, terrorist befriending, American hating, grandmother bashing, liar who will destroy this country. Listen to God, the earthquake may be the first of many such things, because Obama the antichrist is here.

Answer:-You give everyone something to think about ! I agree that he should NOT be even running for President. I agree with everything you said, you are not alone on this one!
  • Question:-Was there an earthquake in new york today?
I live in Queens and i playing call of duty when i felt my house started to shake. After a few seconds it stopped. So was there an earthquake today, around 9 AM?

Answer:-The person above gave you a link to a NY Times City Room blog post. I knew that didn't sound right, because I just read the entire NY Region section of the online NY Times, including the City Room blog, and didn't see it.

So I clicked on the link provided above. It was from June 23, 2010!!!!! So, no, I don't think you felt an earthquake. (I don't know what that other person was thinking.)
  • Question:-OMG is there really going to be an earthquake today and the world is gonna end?
Omg i am so scared because they have been saying that the world is going to end today and it's going to be an earthquake. Is this true? Please please i'm really scared i don't wanna die yet.

Answer:-Omds are you gonna believe dem, this have been said many times and never came true, its all bull3it
  • Question:-Were you shocked about the earthquake today?
I grew up in New Jersey and I never experience this earthquake today of 5.8! Wow!

Answer:-Me too. I thought it was the trucks that go by my house that usually shake my house. But after 3 seconds went by I thought my house was falling down so I ran outside and then I noticed the rest of my street was outside then relized it was a EARTHQUAKE!!!! I was like a earthquake in new jersey????
  • Question:-Will Rome, Italy be rocked with a major earthquake today ?
Years ago a scientist predicted Rome would suffer a major earthquake on May 11th 2011. That's today.

Answer:-This "prediction" was made about a hundred years ago.

This was before people realized that earthquakes are actually caused by plate tectonics.

    Earthquakes CANNOT be predicted.

new madrid fault

  • Question:-What are the chance of a New Madrid fault line earthquake?
Do you think there is a chance that a earthquake could hit the New Madrid Fault Line soon? I'm no geologist but it seems like something is getting ready to happen in that area with the dead birds now the flooding.

Answer:-surface conditions such as rain and temperature do not affect earthquakes 10's to 100's of kilometers below the surface.

However, tidal forces from the Sun and Moon can. Changes in rotational patterns. Other earthquakes. Anything that would change the stresses and forces.

There is always a possibility for an old fault line to become active again, and to generate new fault lines.

One would need to study the movement and stress patterns in the area to give a more accurate answer

Also, there is a relationship between the type and size of fault and its strength

Japan and Alaska have convergent plates and subduction causing potentially large quakes

The Dead Sea and East Africa are on Divergent plate boundaries causing potentially small quakes

The San Andreas is on a Translational plate boundary - sideways motion. -> medium sized quakes

New Madrid is in the middle of the North American plate in a non-active to divergent plate boundary scenario. Quakes here would not be very strong or very often compared to Japan, alaska or California
  • Question:-What type of fault is the New Madrid Fault?
We are learning about the New Madrid Fault, I live about 20 miles south of New Madrid, Missouri, as a project we are to find what kind of fault the New Madrid Fault is (thrust, lateral, reverse, or normal). Also, could you tell me your source, correct answer with source will receive an automatic ten points.

Answer:-The New Madrid fault system contains two types of faults, a strike slip segment oriented to the northeast, running from Marked Tree, AR to Caruthersville, MO, and a northwest trending reverse fault that rests below the New Madrid region. Material on the northwest side of the strike-slip fault moves northeast, and up the ramp.
  • Question:-What type of boundry is the new madrid fault?
i'm doing a project for school. isnt the new madrid fault a transform boundry?

Answer:-No, it's an interplate seismic zone. So it's like the Hawaiian hot spot in the middle of the Pacific Plate.
  • Question:-Is it possible that the earthquake today in Illinois could set off the new madrid fault?
I know they said it was a different fault but people along the new madrid fault have said for years that we are past due for "the big one". so can an earthquake in one place cause and earthquake on a nearby fault?

Answer:-it is possable. earthquakes arent predictable

look here for a weird fact about the earthquake today
    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=At3Kr6gVUiwoVomG_0X3qRHsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080418203557AA2TrhS
  • Question:-Could there be a New Madrid fault line earthquake?
How likely is a New Madrid Fault Line earthquake? With the dead birds and flooding in that area.

Answer:-Dead birds have nothing to do with earthquakes. It could happen any day, but the odds of it happening any time soon are very remote.

I live in So Cal and we are far more likely to get a big shake, but I don't let it bother me. For teh New Madrid, it is more likely that it will happen to your kid's kid's kid's kid's kid's kids. Or even further away than that.
  • Question:-Is BP responsible for the recent tectonic activity along the New Madrid fault?
What in the world is happening in the middle of the United States right now? Thousands of birds are falling dead from the skies, tens of thousands of fish are washing up on shore dead, earthquakes are popping up in weird and unexpected places and people are starting to get really freaked out about all of this.

Well, one theory is that the New Madrid fault zone is coming to life. The New Madrid fault zone is six times bigger than the San Andreas fault zone in California and it covers portions of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. The biggest earthquakes in the history of the United States were caused by the New Madrid fault. Now there are fears that the New Madrid fault zone could be coming to life again, and if a "killer earthquake" does strike it could change all of our lives forever.

Jack M. Reed, a retired Texaco geologist-geophysicist, has been carefully studying the geology of the Gulf of Mexico for over 40 years. Reed is convinced that the Gulf of Mexico is currently tectonically active, and that the Gulf of Mexico is the source for most seismic activity along the New Madrid fault.

One interesting theory is that the "oil volcano" unleashed by the BP oil spill in 2010 may have sparked renewed seismic activity in that part of the world.
    According to Reed,...
"This entire zone through the United States is suffering some type of tectonic activity that I believe is tied to the deeply buried tectonics in the Gulf of Mexico."
    http://www.aapg.org/explorer/2002/11nov/rift_zone.cfm

So did BP disturb those "deeply buried tectonics" by drilling such a deep well and unleashing all that oil that flowed into the Gulf of Mexico?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0tVbjrbkp8&feature=player_embedded
EDIT: Teekno,...what are you talking about?
Have hundreds of birds been falling from the sky and THOUSANDS of fish been washing ashore DEAD for 1000's of years?

    REALLY?

    Huh!

Answer:-I don't know, it needs more investigation. Of course the Righties will poo-poo it and call it a waste of money.

Somebody need to get it through their heads money won't matter when the planet dies.
  • Question:-Regarding recent EQ activity in California and New Madrid fault zones?
I have noticed a lot of EQ activity in California, usually up to 4.2 or so. It's all over the state (Northern, Central, and Southern).

Also noticed activity in the New Madrid seismic region in the midwest, though on a much smaller scale, 1s and 2s on the richter.

Do these mean that a larger quake is coming in the relatively near future? I know New Madrid is pretty close to due for a quake.
For the record, since someone brought it up, I do NOT live in either region. I am just seismically curious.

Answer:-I don't know if that fault is due for a big one like the San Andreas fault is.
Because a fault is recently active doesn't mean a BIG ONE is coming for that fault. The small quakes could just be a release of pressure on the fault and a larger one would not be needed.
On the other hand these small quakes could be small slips adding pressure or getting closer to a larger slip or break on the fault. This is something we can't be sure of.

Also these small quakes on the New Madrid fault could also be effecting other faults by adding pressure or movement which could lead to quakes on these faults.
  • Question:-When do you think the New Madrid Fault will cause a devastating Earthquake?
I live in Southwest Missouri, but I'm originally from Southeast Missouri. With all these big Earthquakes in Chile and Haiti there's been a lot of talk around here that the New Madrid could be next. I know it's been predicted for many years now that it could happen anytime. When do you think it will happen? How bad do you think it will be?

Answer:-I live in Middle Tennessee, and the New Madrid fault has been one of my worst fears for a long time. I thought Middle TN would be far enough away, at first, to avoid serious damage. But after hearing that the earthquakes in 1811 and 1812 rang churchbells in boston, cracked sidewalks in Washington DC, and made the Mississippi flow backwards for a little while that kind of scared me.

I have done a lot of reading, and surprisingly the shockingly high (or so it seems) number of earthquakes we have been having is normal! Heck, with one hitting Turkey just this morning I might be suspicious, but here is a link to a USGS question... I would also suggest checking out the link provided in their answer to help put things into perspective:

    http://www.usgs.gov/faq/faq.asp?id=153&category_id=10

Something else that might make you feel better... In 2009 experts have been saying that they think the fault is dying, or shutting down. It doesn't really compare to active faults out there today, plus they think the small earthquakes we have today are still aftershocks from the 3 really really big ones almost 200 years ago. You can get more info by clicking this link:

    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/03/090313145956.htm

Hope this makes you feel better. If you still want to play it safe (which you should) there are a few links on USGS all about earthquake safety and how to prepare. Remember to have an evacuation plan ready with your WHOLE family and a survival kit in your home... Also ...Look into earthquake insurance! ;)

  • Question:-How could new madrid fault created?
is it created by the new madrid earthquake that happened about 200 years ago or is it because of something else? what is the impact of the new madrid earthquake?

Answer:-The New Madrid earthquake occurred because it is the boundary between two tectonic plates (or more likely a large crack or fault in the N America plate). It probably was there long before the earthquake 200+ years ago. All earthquake faults are areas where there are cracks between two huge pieces of the earth's crust or, at least, two very substantial bodies of rock.

If there was another earthquake the size of the one 200 years ago, it would be pretty bad for St Louis and all the small cities and towns in that part of Mo & Il. Given that the last one did some damage in Chicago and the fact that there are a LOT more buildings in that part of the country today, the damage could be really bad. Look at what happened in Italy this weekend and that was a fairly small quake.

Of course there are lots of other potentially devastating natural phenomena that would be as bad or worse.
  • Question:-What are the chances of a Major earthquake in the New Madrid Fault Zone?
I've been hearing about small quakes in Oklahoma and then in South Carolina and I just wondered if there is any danger from this fault.
Thank You, Mr. Peanut, for the article. It's very informative.

Answer:-The chances are very good. Wikipedia says that "The New Madrid fault and Earthquake prone region is considered at high risk today"

Here's a great article on the subject:

    To become a bigger earthquake?

Answer:-Where did you hear this? Even very small earthquakes are registered on the U.S. Geological Survey site, and I see nothing in Oklahoma this week.

And no, by the way, small quakes are not predictive of a larger one coming. Individual earthquakes are very difficult to predict.

  • Question:-What are the chances of being in a California earthquake?
I always planned on moving to California once I graduate and start off my career there but my mom is always worried about an earthquake happening so she doesn't want me to go. What really are the chances of one happening and getting killed?

Answer:-We have dozens of earthquakes every day in California, most of them not even noticeable. You can see for yourself at the United States Geological Survey's website below. If you live in California for any extended period of time, chances are pretty good you'll experience an earthquake, but noticeable ones aren't too common, and major ones even less so. (That doesn't mean you shouldn't be prepared for one, of course; seismic activity is fairly random.)

Earthquakes themselves don't generally injure or kill people. Falling objects and structural failures as a result of earthquakes do. Thankfully, California has some of the strictest seismic building codes in the United States. Modern buildings are required to meet particular guidelines based on how they're made, what they're made of, and where they're located, so they are generally pretty sturdy. Older buildings are also frequently retrofitted to be earthquake resistant to comply with these codes, although that isn't the case for all older buildings due to issues of time and money. Objects and furniture inside of any building can be braced or secured to minimize falling object injuries. Geography also has an impact on earthquake damage, with areas built on bedrock generally experiencing less severe shaking than areas built on looser, sandier ground.

As someone said, by moving, you are only exchanging one type of natural disaster for another. Ignorance may lead to injury or death, just as it may for other types of disasters, so the better prepared you are, the more likely you will get through it unharmed, whether the disaster be an earthquake, a hurricane, a tornado, a flood, or anything else.

None of this should frighten you or dissuade you from pursuing your goals. California is a great place to live, work, and study. It is the most populous state in the country, so earthquakes can't be that common or that devastating; if they were, no one would live here. You just shouldn't go in with the mindset that an earthquake will never happen. They do happen, and we generally get through them without too much trouble, but you should always be prepared and know what to do in the event of a severe one.
  • Question:-where can I get the best, most comprehensive earthquake coverage for a condo in san francisco, california?
i have already seen what the california earthquake authority (CEA) offers, which is not a whole lot. what are my other options for greater coverage?
i know what the california earthquake authority (CEA) offers through independent agencies or directly. there is not a whole lot coverage.
are their options for greater coverage? for example, has anyone had experience with coverage from Geovera Earthquake Insurance? What other companies/options are out there?

Answer:-~~Sorry to argue here, but it is also available through State Farm in California too. The problem with earthquake insurance is this; it is extremely expensive. If you read all the fine print it only covers you in the event that your whole house is pretty much leveled, and that isn't going to happen here unless you have a much older home. I don't believe any contents are covered either, so call a State Farm agent and see if it is worth the expense to you.~~
  • Question:-what if an earthquake with the same magnitude of Chilean earthquake hit California?
I am curious how buildings in California would withstand the same earthquake. The buildings here were built with stronger materials according to a building code, but the Northridge quake did some damage and knocked a layer of freeway down. The Northridge quake wasn't nearly as strong as Chile's.
The California state insurance program would like to collect $400.00 for an earthquake insurance plan. They must be thinking something big right?
The California state insurance program would like to collect $400.00 for an earthquake insurance plan. They must be thinking something big right?

Answer:-It depends on the location of the quake. Chile's earthquake is one of the largest on record, right up there in the top half dozen. The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake was about a 7.8 and the worst of the damage was liquifaction of the soil -- it turned to something akin to jello during the event -- which broke water lines and collapsed buildings. Then the fire broke out and there was no way to stop the fire. Southern California could easily go up in flames as well, if gas lines break, power lines fall, and there is no water to fight fires. As for building codes, don't count on them saving your house, apartment, or life. There is more variance than the taxpayers are led to believe, and again, it depends on soil, time of day (rush hour versus night time).

Suggestion: put together a backpack or duffel bag for each family member, with a set of clothes, first aid kit, water bottles or packets, canned fruit and a few MRE's. Make a plan to call one person who lives "out of the immediate area/state", and make sure your family knows that number by heart. This is so that they can keep tabs on you and you aren't making a whole bunch of calls when your electricity is out and you can't charge your cell phone. When my husband and I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, we had put together three "earthquake bags" (one in each car and a slightly larger one beside our bed) and we did this just one month before the Loma Prieta quake hit. We had piece of mind, at least a little, although we were right down the road from the Cypress Structure...and could hear the sirens and feel the aftershocks.
  • Question:-After a widely reported earthquake in California, many people call their insurance company to apply for earthq?
After a widely reported earthquake in California, many people call their insurance company to apply for earthquake insurance. Might this reaction reflect some deviation from rationality? Discuss.

Answer:-a waste of money. the majority of our homes will be destroyed, there's no way insurance will be able to cover everyone.
  • Question:-when is the california earthquake going to happen?
What day is the California earthquake supposably going to happen?

Answer:-Earthquakes cannot be predicted with any accuracy whatsoever. For the past three decades the USGS has been telling me that "the Big One" was coming sometime in the next three decades. When it didn't happen, they moved it forward and said, "Oh, we meant *this* three decades," et cetera.

Earthquakes happen when they happen, and we can't do anything about it save to prepare for how to handle ourselves if a horribly disastrous earthquake were to occur. Incidentally, there is no fault in California's San Andreas Fault Zone which has the proper geometry to create a seismic event much beyond the magnitude of the 7.6, 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. It's just physically incapable. Further, we're a modern, developed country, with good codes as far as where you can put a structure, how it has to be designed, what it can be made out of, and so on. So a large earthquake hitting a major California city will not end up looking like Port-au-Prince. Look at Chile, which was an 8.8, and compared to Haiti, suffered no damage. Yes, there was damage, but it was very minimum, all told. Why? Chile is a modern country, even if we don't hear about it very often. It would be similar here, and again, we can't go much farther than a 7.6, not nearly even approaching an 8.8.

I think that "the Big One" just happened the other day with the 7.2, as it fit every requirement and description. If it doesn't, I'm not worried.
  • Question:-Who was the actress killed about 10 or 20 years ago in a california earthquake?
I remember a few years ago during an earthquake in California an elderly actress was killed during the disaster but for the life of me I can not remember her name, Does anyone remember who she is?

    Answer:-
  • Question:-What is the average repair cost to homeowner for property damage caused by a typical earthquake in California?
We are considering buying an earthquake insurance for a resident home in California. But the earthquake policy typically covers only 85% of the house rebuild cost, homeowners first have to pay the 15% of that (the deductible). Say the house insured for $300K, then homeowners have to pay $45K first before the insurance comes in to cover the rest for $255K. If the average repair cost is more than $45K, then it may by worth buying earthquake insurance to us.

Answer:-We have lived in Huntington Beach, CA for nearly 5 years and do not have earthquake insurance. In that time we have experienced 3 quakes of magnitude 3 or more and there has been no damage. Average repair cost so far =$0. Had we taken out insurance at $1000 per year we would be $5k down now.
Sure, if 'the big one' comes along we would be out of pocket maybe $250k. It's a peace of mind thing - some people (ALL my neighbors; I asked around when we moved here) are not worried about having zero insurance. If you feel the need to have insurance, a deductible will lower your premium, perhaps you are ok with that, or look for the coverage that will repay as much of your home value as possible. Compare what you do with your car insurance (do you prefer comprehensive or basic?) or your health care (high deductible, low deductible, no deductible?).
Remember that a good chunk of what you paid for your property is for the land, so you may not need to have such a big insured amount.

peru earthquake

  • Question:-Anyone know where I can find list of deaths in Peru earthquake?
I'm looking to find the names of the people who died in the earthquake in Peru yesterday. Some family of mine lives right where the earthquake occured, and I need to know if they're alright.

Answer:-Hotline to find out who are the victims:
    If you're in Peru 0-800-10828
If your in another country (00 511) 315-6600, ext. 2788
    Hope this helps
  • Question:-Peru had an earthquake on August 16th,would that cause the northern fault lines in California to rupture?
I'm no scientist, but because Peru had an earthquake, would that put more pressure on the fault lines north, up the coast and eventually cause major earthquakes on the coast of California? Didn't California have a small earthquake just recently and wasn't there predictions of a major earthquake on the San Andreas Fault line made on CNN just a few days ago? Shouldn't people be made more aware of this possibility?

Answer:-Not really, the earthquake is a relieving of the pressure on an area of the fault, it shouldn't have a major effect on other areas.

Generally a part of the fault line which is subject to Earthquakes, but has not had one for years is most at risk. There are instances where a fault has been dormant for a long time {Indonesia recently} and it is subject to several fairly major shocks. However when the stress is relieved is not predictable, although sometimes pre-shocks are detected.

In summary; go move to the center of a tectonic plate.
  • Question:-How many deaths exactly happened in the Peru earthquake on July 18th?
I was just wondering, cause I used to live near there so it kinda worried me how hard it struck. So, yeah.

    Answer:-510 so far
  • Question:-What is best water purification tablet. Travelling to Peru with earthquake relief items.?
I have been recommended RediClor, but people in Peru requested Helaxon.
Helaxon more expensive and does not last long, I've been told.
Travelling this Fri,Aug24 am. Need answer asap!
    Any recommendations about internet store?
I need to stretch my money and buy best option, but good one too.
    Thank you!

    Answer:-You can contact peruvian embassy.

  • Question:-how much tsunami warning would residents of southeastern Japan have if a strong earthquake struck the Peru—Chi?
Assuming the alarm was raised immediately, how much tsunami warning would residents of southeastern Japan have if a strong earthquake struck the Peru—Chile Trench?

    Answer:-Between 8-12 hours.
  • Question:-Who else was in the earthquake in Peru in august 07?
    Just wondering?

I was in the province of Ica (epicenter of the quake)

    How did you feel?

And also do you sometimes feel like the ground is shaking even when its not?

    Answer:-no one that i know..
  • Question:-Do you think that the second collapse of the mine in Utah had anything to with the earthquake in Peru?
And if so what do you think is going on with the stability of the earth itself?
Just wanted to make sure everyone realizes that Peru is on the same planet as Utah!!!

Answer:-Aftershocks in an unstable mine are not tectonic in nature (earth crust moving). Not enough energy from the Peru quake would make it that far north, or else it would have triggered a lot of quakes in Cali as well.

I have a theory that the melting ice caps are redistributing such a large mass of water around the planet that the poles are undergoing tectonic rebound, causing stress at plate boundaries around the world. IT'S aTHEORY (for whoever wishes to argue the point) but I think I am going to watch quake frequency for the next few years.
  • Question:-How do I find orphans from The Huaraz Earthquake of 1970, in Peru? Where would I find a list?
My husband had family living in Yungay or Huaraz in 1970. They never found his cousins, children who may have been at the Circus during the Earthquake and eventual landslide. Does anyone know who would have a list of survivors from this disaster? Alot of the children were sent to Europe for adoption, but I don't know where to. Are there any good websites for this kind of thing?

Answer:-It is very difficult to access to a list of orphans (if there is actually one) The only thing I can think of is to actually visit Yungay (the new town) and start asking the local authorities. Just remember that when the earthquake happened, the government was run by militars who may or may not have sent the orphans omewhere else. The best thing would be to contact people who lived there at the time, and local authorities now in Yungay or in Huaraz. Websites? I dont think so, these things are very delictae to post online.
    Good luck!
  • Question:-Do you think that the second collapse of the mine in Utah had anything to do with the earthquake in Peru?
And if so what do you think is going to happen to the stability of the earth itself?
Just wanted to make sure that everyone does realize that Peru is in the same planet as Utah!!!
They have been calling it a sizemic bump on the news.

Answer:-Possibly, the tectonic plates are very large, I dont hink Utah felt any seismic waves though, so I dont think that is the cause of the mine collapse.
  • Question:-If you could prevent either an earthquake in Peru that would kill 40,000 people,...?
a crash at your local airport that would kill 200 people, or an automobile accident that would kill an acquaintance of yours, which would you choose?

Answer:-Wow that's really tough. I would never want to kill anybody I know or have anything happen to them, so I'd have to go with that, number "3" so to say.

Not that I don't care about Peru or the local airport, but if they are people I don't really know and never met what does it have to do with me or my loved ones? You don't know if the people at the local airport were unkind or even people who destroyed themselves and I don't live in Peru.

california earthquake

  • Question:-California Earthquake?
News now reporting 5.6 mag earthquake rocks San Jose, California. Talk about kicking someone when they're down, as if the fires weren't enough. What do you think?
1st Dragon, you must be a brave person. I live in Ky. and as far back as I can remember most of what we've ever felt were tremors and they scared the living daylights outta me!

Answer:-I haven't heard anything. Guess I haven't been watching the news. Yikes! That seems pretty scary. I have never lived in California, but I remember the quake that happened in the late 80's where a bridge collapsed and there were a lot of cars trapped underneath. This was the double bridge that had collapsed.
  • Question:-California EARTHQUAKE. ?
there predicting a earthquake in california.
    just in case, just wondering
    what will happen?
    like will buildings fall.
cause i live in a 3 story house.
and im scared to sleep at night.

Answer:-No doubt the scientists were expecting a major earthquake in your state. But fortunately you were affected by a lower scale of Richter magnitude ( 5.6) I think. You will not get any thing bigger than that for about another ten years. Please watch for the fallowing situations.
Methods for prediction of earthquakes & Tsunami
Even though it is difficult to predict, the following methods may help.
    .
    1. Seismic gape: - The earthquake at a particular place may occur for every fixed gape of time. By knowing the past records of the quakes affected at that place may help to decide when the earthquake is next due.
    2. Planet position.: - When the stress is accumulated at the tectonic plate boundary and the same time if the position of more than 2 planets comes in a straight line this may help to accelerate the earthquakes. There fore the full moon days and new moon days are more vulnerable days for earthquakes. Some time this method fails why? Think of a sick patient. New moon and full moon days are dangerous for only sick patents. These days will not affect the healthy people. The same way if there is no accumulated stress at the tectonic plate boundaries no need to worry about the planet positions.
    3. Sun rays falling method: - If you observe the position of the sun rays falling on our wall at a particular time on all days it should form an angular infinity symbol. If there is any deviation in its path it means that there is some difference in height of the earth. That means some strain noticed at that place. Somebody claims that they can predict the place of epicenter by observing this. The laser beam measuring method of earth height from satellite also will help.
    4. MDCB:- Chinese scientist claims that they can predict up to 60 % accuracy by sensing electro magnetic rays.
    5. Cloud forming: - Few hours to a few days before the occurrence of earthquakes a cloud reader claims that he has noticed a peculiar mosaic type of formation .We may also notice some lightening in the sky.
    6. By sound :- A professor from Ajmeer University claims that he was able to hear a low frequency noise under 125 meter depth in a bore well. The same thing was reported by one Mr. Nair that he heard some roaring noise under the earth one week before the occurrence of earthquake in Gujarat.
    7. By frequency of waves :- Mr Richter Allen of Berkley University claims that he can decide the magnitude of earthquake just 4 seconds after observing the frequency of the primary wave. Present method needs the full seismographic picture to find the real magnitude that too from as many places as possible to have fairly accurate results. His claim has got some truth because when there is a slip of bigger tectonic plate the frequency of quake will be less. If a small tectonic plate slips the frequency of the waves will be more.
    8. There are several changes in nature and in the behaviors of animals and birds can be observed before an earthquake and Tsunami. The water level in well may change. Stay away from beaches if you sense earthquake waves. The Tsunami may attack long after the shaking is stopped. I wrote several articles on these subjects.
Have one simple earthquake alarm installed in your house.

  • Question:-California earthquake???
30 minutes ago, there was a very small earthquake in California. It was not a big deal.
But i heard later, there will be a big earthquake that will knock down California. Is that true????
    Should i live here???

Answer:-that will knock down california? what are you talking about.
  • Question:-california earthquake?
Why is everyone saying California is going to break off into the ocean and tsunamis will come etc? I'm moving there in two months and this is not something i want to happen to me! Do you think its even possible?

Answer:-This was an erroneous outcome someone long ago speculated about the possibilities of events, based on the location of the San Andrea's Fault. This fault runs from Mexico to the San Francisco bay, in the state of CA and runs through the two most populated areas of the state. Because it is a feature of where the North American and Pacific tectonic plates meet, the 'falling off' thing was suggested and has even been the plot line of a few movies "Superman". Fact is, the North American plate slowly moving southward and the Pacific plate is slowly moving northward, each about 3" a year. They're not pulling apart (which a 'fall off" theory would suggest). They're ginding past each other and if anything else sub-ducting, one moving underneath (toward) each other. The movement isn't smooth but instead, continents "locking" with each other for periods of them, but as the plates beneath push in the directions indicated, the crust which is somewhat elastic. cannot withstand the pressure and "snaps" or releases (in small continuous segments less than 4 miles or so at a time) and creates an earthquake. The San Andrea's fault line is not the only falutline in the state, there are hundreds of them, though the San Andrea's is probably the most famous and gets the most attention. So will we snap off and float away, no. Will there be earthquakes and possible tsunamis? Almost nearly certain. There is 6%-59% of a strong (6.7 Scale scale or stronger) earthquake taking place on any point in CA over the next 30 years. That's pretty good. See the map. Don't freak out, you'll have lots of neighbors and pals do down with you. Peace
  • Question:-CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE!?
My English teacher told us that there is a 98% chance of a 6.0-8.0 earthquake today. I am a senior in high school and all, but am seriously kinda freaked out . This weird weather and everything.. Do you think there will be a big earthquake soon?

    Answer:-Oh I see now.
Now I have to figure out where this rumor came from. Anyway I can't say no or yes, as an earthquake of that scale cannot be forecasted in advance and is bound to happen in any 24 hour period of any given day.
Why not post the same question in 24 hours and we'll see what took place...
  • Question:-How far could the next big California earthquake travel?
So this is for my Earth Science class, but it's hard to find!So say if the next big California earthquake occured, do you think there'd be a lot of damage in the Central Valley(San Joaquin) region of California? Do you think it would at least be over a 5.0 in the region? (not world wide)

    Answer:-Across the entire state...lol
  • Question:-Will there be a giant Earthquake in Southern California on Thursday?
I heard from the newspaper that a giant earthquake is gonna hit Southern California hard on thursday.
But I've seen that there's a huge Southern California earthquake prepareness drill on the same day.
I don't know which one is correct.
I'd really want to know about it.

In addition, I've seen snakes crawling around on the ground everywhere.

I wonder what or when is it gonna happen.

Answer:-It is only a drill.Nobody has born in the world to predict the accurate occurrence of earthquake. I am the one working on finding the way to give early warning by cheap means. Even though it has proved its use in several occasions I am not yet getting proper acceptance from nodal agencies.
  • Question:-Where can I buy California Earthquake flavored potato chips?
I purchased some California brand Earthquake flavored potato chips from a rest stop vending machine. I had never heard of them before but I tried them AND LOVED THEM! Since the rest stop was during a vacation trip, I can't go back to where I found them. I looked for retailers on the internet but turned up nothing. Please let me know if you can help, thanks!

Answer:-I lived in California and I always loved to have California Earthquake Potato Chips. However, they are difficult to find at many places. My friend Jessica, bought them at a Redners Warehoue Market., They usually carry them there or at some ACME locations.I hope that answers your question.

I don't believe any contents are covered either, so call a State Farm agent and see if it is worth the expense to you.~~

san francisco earthquake

  • Question:-What effects did the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and?
What effects did the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and the great chicago firehave on long range city planning?

i have to write a paper on this so as much info you have will be appreciated. thanks

Answer:-Quit building on reclaimed land, quit building wooden buildings and keep cows out of the city.
  • Question:-Examples of San Francisco 1906 earthquake amateur photographers?
I am looking for examples (eg digital archival images) showing amateurs taking photographs in the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. It's claimed this was one of the first disasters to be documented heavily by amateur photographers ... I want to see some images of these people "at work". Also interested in images of the 'quake and fire taken specifically by amateurs.
Please note specific requirements. I'm after images specifically of or by amateur photographers. Specific links would be appreciated. I have already conducted general searches myself, but I'm hoping someone has some specific leads to help answer my question.

Answer:-I have been collecting SF Earthquake negatives for about 10 years now. It was heavily documented by amateurs.

Enter "earthquake" "negative" and search closed auctions. You can usually find a few.
  • Question:-Who was the interim fire chief during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake?
I am doing a research paper on the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, and I was wondering who the alternate fire chief was. I know that the original one, Dennis T. Sullivan, was killed during the initial quake, but nowhere does it say who filled in for him. Can you help me out?

Answer:-The sheriff was appointed as interim fire chief. Here is a link. Scroll down to find him.

    http://www.sfsheriff.com/sheriffs.htm
  • Question:-How long did it take to clean up after the 1906 san francisco earthquake?
I was just looking up natural disasters and was looking at one of the world's most well known disaster of the 1906 earthquake that rock san francisco that claimed 3,000 lives.
I was just wondering how long did it take for the city too clean up and shape like it has today?

Answer:-We know it as the "earthquake and fire," since it was the fire that destroyed the city, not the quake itself.

It was pretty much rebuilt by 1915, when the Pacific Exposition was held. Fun fact: the site of the Exposition was built on landfill from the rubble that was cleaned up; and that's the same area where the houses collapsed in the 1989 earthquake, when the landfill liquefacted.
  • Question:-If the LA earthquake had a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale and the magnitude of the San Francisco earthq?
If the LA earthquake had a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale and the magnitude of the San Francisco earthquake had a magnitude 35 times as intense as the LA earthquake, what is the magnitude of the San Francisco earthquake?

    Answer:-It's 6.5 + log(35) which equals 8.

Logarithm of 35 is about 1.5. It is the exponent of 10 which will yield 35. Or 10^1.5 = 35 (roughly)
  • Question:-How was the San Francisco Earthquake delt with (1989)?
I'm doing a project and I was wondering how was the San Francisco Earthquake of 1989 delt with and what were the steps taking buy the community to rebuilt it?

Answer:-The Loma Prieta earthquake, also known as the Quake of '89 and the World Series Quake, was a major earthquake that struck the San Francisco Bay Area of California on October 17, 1989 at 5:04 p.m. Caused by a slip along the San Andreas Fault, the earthquake lasted approximately 15 seconds and measured 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale (surface-wave magnitude 7.1).[1] The quake killed 67 people throughout northern California, injured 3,757 people and left more than 12,000 people homeless.
  • Question:-Do you think there will be another Huge earthquake in San Francisco this year?
Long ago I read about the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. The article said that scientists believed that a major earthquake is prone to happen every 100 years. This year is Its centennial, do u think its gonna happen?

Answer:-I have noticed that earthquakes seem to occur after a wetter than normal rainy season. So, don't be surprised.
  • Question:-The 1906 San Francisco earthquake had a magnitude of 8.3 on the Richter scale. At the same time in South Ameri?
The 1906 San Francisco earthquake had a magnitude of 8.3 on the Richter scale. At the same time in South America, there was an earthquake with magnitude 4.1 that caused only minor damage. How many times more intense was the San Francisco earthquake than the South American one?

Be sure to provide examples in your answers and to add correct and relevant information.

Answer:-The Richter scale is a logarithmic scale.
That is, the intensity of an earthquake is proportional to 10^R where R is the Richter scale magnitude of the earthquake.

Comparing the San Francisco earthquake with the South American one, the intensities were in the ratio:
    10^8.3 / 10^4.1 = 10^(8.3-4.1) = 10^4.2 = 15849 = approx. 16000 to two significant figures.

Answer: the San Francisco earthquake was about 16000 times more intense than the South American one.
  • Question:-What if San Francisco earthquake of 1906 never happened?
I need couple sentences on this question from history.
If San Francisco earthquake never happened....

Answer:-My grandparents would not have had to go live with a relative (grandmother's sister) in Oakland, and my father would not as a result have told my mother that if she ever saw this relative coming down their street, she was to either shoot her or call the police.
Seriously, what effect? SF would not have been mostly burned down and needed to be rebuilt. I suppose this led to greater interest in earthquakes and geology in the USA, and perhaps improved building codes in California.
  • Question:-timeline for the san francisco earthquake of 1906?
what are some things in history that happened after the san francisco earthquake of 1906 as a result of this earthquake? such as advances in technology and such? i need dates with them too.

Answer:-This would be your best resource, from the Utah Geological Survey:

    http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/nca/1906/18april/index.php
