  Answer:-Yes I have! My family and I drove by a few parks in downtown Milwaukee this afternoon. They were beautiful. Lots of blues and whites.

• Question:-How can Christmas lights be utilized indoors to add a subtle ambience to a room without being overpowering?
  Would it be better to use the Christmas lights that come in tinted shades and give off a soft light orange light as opposed to white light or other colors? I don't want it to look like a Christmas decoration/theme or look tacky. Also, what are some safety precautions to keep in mind when decorating with them? Are they a fire hazard if draped over fabric, for instance?
  
  Answer:-I have often decorated tall indoor plants with those tiny white lights. They give off a soft light that doesn't look particularly Christmasy. I usually leave them on throughout the nite as they light the way to other parts of the house when all is dark in the middle of the night.
  
  I wouldn't use them over fabric for any length of time as they might scorch the fabric if it came into direct contact.
• Question:-What are the best christmas lights to use that wont burn out quickly?
  I am looking to buy some new christmas lights for outdoor use. Maybe some isicle lights or something. I just want to know what to look for when purchasing the lights. I have had way too many experiences with the lights burning out or not working after one season. What are the best lights to get and where can I find them?   Answer:-If you want long life go for LED lights. The globes themselves will last for about 20yrs. Where they will fail is in the cable and the connections, so go for some with a thicker cable, strong joins and preferably with the cable loomed (bundled) together the give the whole thing some strength.
  If you are going to use them outside make sure they are the 12v or 24v version for safety.
  As with all bud style lighting handle with care when installing, dismantaling and storing and it will last you many seasons. Remember one small snag is enough to ruin the whole chain.
  As to where to find them most stores stock them these days you can even get them at discount stores, China is flooding the market with cheap LED at the moment. Hope this helps.

  Answer:-i'd like to know that also. i've used little sticky tabs with velcro and clips to hold them up (got them at walmart) but they fell down after a few weeks (the stickiness wore off). i've also tried a hot glue gun every few feet and that lasted a little longer but i still had a few give out after a month or so. if it's only for a single event, and you don't have time or can't find those sticky tab/velcro/clip things, i would go with a hot glue gun. make sure the glue blob wraps around the wires because the wires can pop out of the glue pretty easily. this should be adequate for the party but if somebody else has a more permanent solution, i'd be happy to know about it also.

  I see in my neighborhood a lot of houses are full of christmas decorations on the outside. So many decorations that people come from different parts of the city just to see the lights spectacular.   Answer:-I think it means that lights can add that extra sparkle to the tree. They make the tree stand out from anything else in your house, because it is so bright and illuminated. Also, the way the lights reflect off the ornamnts really draws your eye to the tree and it really makes the tree come alive :) Can't wait to put my tree back up again!
• Question:-Can leaving Christmas lights on kill a pine tree?
  We have a small pine that my husband left Christmas lights on for over a year. I recently noticed that it is dying and some needles and branches are turning brown. I had my husband take the lights off, but I want to know if there is anything else we can do to help restore this tree. I heard that 7 up works. Is that a myth or are there any other home remedies that could help?
  
  Answer:-I cannot see Xmas lights being the cause of your problems. Without seeing the tree or knowing its history it is impossible to give an opinion.

  okay in my opinion ghost adventure is way better than ghost hunters. First of all, unlike the ghost hunter crew, the GAC (ghost adventure crew) has less people so the evidence couldn't get contaminated with. I think that since the Ghost adventure crew takes more of a emotional approach when they investigate, is the reason why they get way more evidence than ghost hunters. i think that ghost hunters hardly get any evidence and overall is just to boring to watch. Whereas ghost adventure is exciting and i believe all the evidence they catch is TRUE! so GHOST ADVENTURE IS BETTER!

  I use to like Ghost Hunters but after watching so many shows some of it seems a little hokey. Like why is it always the light they can turn off but can't do anything else. Some of the things I just don't believe are ghosts. But, how do they do it with the light?
  
  Answer:-I think sometimes it is a little over the edge, but at the same time, if you weren't a believer before the show and you're watching it, expecting it to turn you into a believer...you're just gonna end up thinking its fake. Its isn't always real, but I don't think that its always fake either. The live ones? Those are fake. There was one where they set up a camera and there was a head at the end of the hallway peeking out, I doubt that was fake. Some things are hard to fake.
  
  The flashlight is a really hard debunk, but I'm sure there's a way. Poke it with something and edit it out later? Lots of camera tricks could get rid of it.

  Answer:-Most of the video cameras that are used in many investigations including many of the paranormal programs are night vision and are light sensitive so dimming the lights or going lights out is essential. Also by working in dark light or no light it allows for there not to be many shadows which can fool the eyes and cause someone to mistake a normal shadow for a possible "Shadow Person'. Also working with EMF meters can require that there not be much electrical devices and fixtures on so they do not get false readings. Ghosts and spirits are energy and you are more likely to get an accurate reading without power being on though you can still investigate it is a bit more accurate with it off.

• Question:-Phone text messaging time?
  I have an LG Vu Plus and ever since Day Light Savings, my phone receives text messages from someone an hour earlier, Sent time not actual time, than what it says on my phone. This has really messed up my texting layout because I use the Conversation View on my phone rather than Standard. An example of whats happening would be like this:

  Anyway, I was just wondering if there is something wrong with my phone or if I just screwed up the settings. It's either this or my phone is able to time travel, and I honestly don't want to have to deal with that again, just kidding.

  Answer:-A good thing to try would be to turn off your phone and then turn it back on. This usually resets the time and makes the timing in sync and correct.

  Can you assist us---we have had very unfortunate situation with CHASE BANK, and somehow my goal here is that I want the average American consumer to know what can happen to them at CHASE BANK--or maybe any bank for that matter. Especially, in light of the enormous bail-outs in recent times.
  
  Perhaps short-sghtedly I sent Jamie Dimon, Chase CEO and others at his bank authentic appeals related to our difficulty but have not received any response from them. I guess I don't have the pull-power of the President.
  
  Please understand: I don't even really have time for this. We have been based in Australia for many years and am in the process of moving our family back to the USA for personal reasons. However, this has been too shocking and revealing for me to ignore. And, it happened just when we most needed to depend on our bank and the stability of our financial standing, systems and way of doing things.
  
  Just around 10 days ago, I received a poorly written form letter from CHASE BANK, dated 22nd July (received around 13th July) with a partially handwritten address and just a few small paragraphs. Essentially it told us that all of our bank accounts with CHASE BANK would be closed in 10 days--21st July 2011. I still remember staring at the letter in disbelief. To be honest, my first thought was that this was some attepmt at fraud or getting our ID numbers etc. Sure enough, this was the real thing. So I phoned the number on the letter to get some information, and I was patched into Manilla. I could barely understand the person on the phone and got nowhere. This was in relation to our bank accounts that had almost $400,000 (life time savings--almost everything we have) in them for a long time at zero interest. But since the US dollar had sunk so low, we just left it there for time being and wired to Australia as needed. Almost $400,000, and the CHASE BANK has no explanation to what has happened. Noone called us. Noone emailed us. Noone 'knew' anything, except that it was a 'Business Decision'. There line is this: "Customers have the right to change banks; we have the right to change customers." Really? I know where it says this in the bank designed contracts, but is this REALLY acceptable?
  
  There was no acknowlegement of the greater responsibility the bank has to our persoanl and financial livlihoods, businesses, obligations to pay for our children's education, and other things, nothing. If this is Jamie Dimon's version of 'Capitalism', than I would like millions and millions of Americans to know of my experience, to hear of it 1st hand, to see me describe the anxiety and anguish we went thru over here in Australia, so they can fairly consider MOVING THEIR CAPITAL TO ANOTHER BANK. Not only is the customer service extremely poor in my experience, but the whole approach reaks of being 'un-American'. I have lived overseas for many years, and a distinguishing charateristic of American culture, as should be represented by our largest Banks and other national infrastructure that we let operate in our country, is an unbridled and unmatched generosity in communication and spirit and practical help and willingness to make things right. What has happened to our country?!
  
  Our business that sells a very unique light and healthy flat bread wrap to stores across the USA was receiving payments from customers to these accounts and paying bills. This is a business that started out selling 1 box of bread and now thankfully sells 10's of thousands of packages every month in many countries, including the USA. All of a sudden, with little warning, we were required to change everything. And, we still have no idea why. Thankfully, we were able to open accounts over the phone and internet with another bank and make changes as necessary. But what kind of bank or system is this? Is there anything here that you might want to discuss to tell a story? I would like the opportunity to tell this story widely and let people consider once again whether perhaps banks should have greater accountability and whether they even want to bank, specifically, with Chase Bank.

• Question:-Why is my 2001 323ci BMW overheating?
  Bought the car in March 25th , 2011, put $2000 down and have already payed $600 more in car payments towards the car. I am currently 2 car payments behind because of the car problems. A week later the Check Engine Light came on and so did the Coolant Sensor Light. I already bought New Thermostat for the car for $140, thought it would prevent it from overheating, it did for about 2 days and then it started overheating again. I can only drive the car for about 60 blocks at a time and then it will die on me. Then I have to let it sit and cool off for at least 4 to 5 hours before I can drive it again. Could it be that it needs new head gaskets?
  
  I have not taken it to a repair shop yet because I will have a hard time making car payments and doing repairs and getting a rental car all at the same time. I want to take the car back to the dealership but the car came with an implied warranty only. I am so upset. I also failed to make sure the car was okay before I bought it. I used all of my savings for a down payment.
  
  I need some good advice of what steps to take and in what order, so I can get the best end result.
  
  My plan was to get a rental car, take the car to the repair shop after I get the diagnosis. I am afraid that if it needs new head gaskets, then it will not be worth fixing and I will not be able to afford to fix it, but I am still obligated to make car payments. Then what? But if the repairs are under $500 then I will be fine. But what if it's the head gaskets? What would you guys do?
  When I bought the Thermostat the repair shop did a diagnosis and .problem codes that came up were: P0313- Misfires randomly, P0455-Evapleak and P0117-Coolant Temperature Sensor.
  
  Also I live in Phoenix, Arizona around 16th Street and Camelback and like I said before I can only drive the car short distances, so what repair shop would you guys recommend from your good experiences and positive results to repair my lemon BMW?? I need my car fixed right, I do not have time to worry or want to worry about repairs. I was thinking German Auto Service, 5244 N 7th St, Phoenix, Arizona, 85014, they said that their prices are lower than the rest according to their website.

• Question:-Why does depth of field increase as you allow less light into the camera?
  Can somebody please explain, in dummies terms, why the depth of field increases with less light?...that is the smaller the aperture, the deeper the DOF. And if you close the aperture, how do you compensate for light loss? By slowing the shutter speed?
  
  Answer:-There are already some good bits of info above. Let me state it simply: depth of field doesn't have anything to do specifically with letting less light in. However, it DOES have to do with the size of the aperture. The smaller the hole, the greater the depth of field. You can take this all the way to using a pinhole, which will focus an image even though there is no lens at all. In effect, the tiny aperture becomes a lens.
  
  It so happens that the smaller the aperture, also the less light reaches the inside of the camera during a given amount of time (when compared to a larger aperture).
• Question:-When is the electrical field of a camera flash the strongest?
  Writing a story where I can fudge the science a bit, but I wanted to get this correct. I'm using a camera flash in the story and (without getting into too much detail) need to know when the electrical field around the thing would be the strongest.
  
  The light charges, then expends the energy. It would seem that the field would peak when the charge was expended, but I'm not strong enough in this science to be certain; it might be most powerful when the charge is at its peak, *before* the light goes off.

  Answer:-There are two different electric fields involved.
  One is the electrical field in the capacitor which stores energy prior to the flash. It is pumped up by a voltage multiplier circuit until it reaches the designed voltage, which is the voltage at which the capacitor stores the amount of energy needed for the flash. It stays at this high level until the flash is triggered.
  The other field is that around the conductors. It is highest at the instant of triggering and rapidly declines to near zero as the charge is in the capacitor is dissipated.
  If the flash is the type where a primary coil is normally charged and then is collapsed at triggering to generate a current in a secondary coil, then the field is high up until the point at which it is triggered. It is the collapsing field, which is always smaller than the primary field, which generates the current in the flash.

  Answer:-If you need to shot in poor lighting condition, a DSLR is a must. If you don't know too much about camera, it is not easy to learn how to use a DSLR effectively.
  
  You may consider Canon S5 IS. It has a 12x stabilized zoom lens.

  Some photo students are freaking out saying that photographers apparetnly won't be needed no more since you can make stuff in focus and make the light right and stuff like that.
  
  Answer:-NO.
  It will just mean that hopefully we won't be seeing so much out of focus crap on the "what is my photogrpahy like" questions.
  
  It will not help with composition, it will not help with wb, it will not help with subject matter or any number of other things which go towards making a good photograph

• Question:-Why does increasing the F-Stop on a camera deepen the field of focus.?
  I understand that narrowing the aperture on your lens increases the depth of field, bringing objects in the background more into focus. However, I do not understand why this happens. What physical property of light or of the lens causes this effect?
  
  And a secondary question for anyone who knows. If not, no biggie. Does the same property apply to the human eye? Is the depth of our field of vision shallower in low light than in bright light?

  Answer:-As was already said the reason that focal length and aperature size affect DOF is the concept of the circle of confusion. Although we talk about DOF as if its a hard line where things on one side are in focus and things on the other are not; thats not how it works. There is an actual focus point where the lines of light converge on the film or sensor and that point is in the greatest focus. In fact its the only point where the image it truely and completely in focus. Outside that point the light rays to not converge exactly on the film of sensor. Any areas that are "acceptably sharp." are said to be inside the depth of field. The more the light has to be bent smaller the area that is acceptably sharp. The center of the lens is where the light rays have to be bent the least so the area that is acceptably sharp is longer. Now on the surface that would make you think you should always shoot at the lowers aperature for the best focus. That also is not true. It will give you the greatest DOF but not necessarily the best sharpness. This is becuase the shape of the aperature also causes light to bend ( diffraction). So the sweet spot on most lenses where they are sharpest I have always been taught is closed down 2 to 3 stops from max aperature. Its also thought aperature geometry effects this sharpness
  If you want to confuse it more there is also the concept of depth of focus/focus spread which deals with how flat a sensor or film has to be in a camera to be able to record the maximum DOF from the lens

  Now if that was confusing the human eye is even more so because yes there is a set focal point and yes pupil size effects this due to diffraction and abberations and there is also a circle of confusion but our brain does not always interpret it that way. It makes accomodations based on what it thinks we should be seeing. Its the same with white balance. Despite the fact that light has different temperatures we see white as white under most lighting conditions the camera needs to be adjusted for light temperature to see true white. Also muscles in the eye change the shape of the lens and eye when out thoughts change what we are looking at so when you are looking at the flower yes the things in the background are out of focus and out of the depth of field but as soon as you think about that and pay attention to it the eye refocuses on that background and you do not notice it was out of focus. We can learn to override this, thats how those pictures that looked like wierd color lines until you changed your focus then you saw an image in them worked. We notice DOF in a picture because even though things were at different distance when we looked though the lens on the print or screen they are the same distance from the eye on that output. We cannot refocus the eye to make the back of the picture come into focus the way we could when we looked at the actual scene. I hope I am not babbling and making this too confusing. When we get older the ability of the eye to change shape lessens, one way to say it is that the eye is less flexible, this is called presbyopia and its what martin is talking about.   Answer:-There are indeed flashes that zoom - many of them. I don't konw if one is made for your camera or not, but find your camera at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) and they will show accessories under the camera. Sometimes they show flash units. If not, this is a good site to search anyhow.
• Question:-Looking for a high dof macro camera most often in low light?
  Hi, I have a very specific application in which I need a high depth of field using the macro setting and most often have low light conditions. I can get some more light in the end if that is what I need but that would be inconvenient. I'd also like optical image stabilization, aperture priority and as some insurance, the ability to use a wide angle lens. I was looking at the G7 or G9 but reviews I have read of them say that the macro is no good in low light (although it is great in good lighting conditions). Also looking at the Nikon Coolpix 5000. I'm looking for something in that size range. I'd like to end up with a depth of field of about an inch at a range of around 2-4cms. Thanks
  
  Answer:-I believe you need a (d)SLR with a serious lens. Eventually a special macro lens (like these here: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid=155). DOF becomes lower with bigger aperture and with magnification of image. Since you have low light you might need big aperture which will lower the DOF. A higher ISO setting might help. If you need to work macro (say 1:1, which means image size on senzor equals real image size), again you will loose DOF.
  dSLRs have bigger sensors than compact cameras and usually give usable image quality also with higher ISO --> so you may use narrower aperture and thus longer DOF. But I am afraid your question has no stright answer, at least I do not know it.
  There is also an Adobe PS technique to make more photos, each focused on different distance, then combine them in one image with big DOF. I saw details in a recent Outdoor Photography, I believe. But you need a static subject. Also, if your subject is static put the camera on tripod, use smallest aperture you have (you might need long exposure time) and shoot.

• Question:-Ran red light in Massachusetts/NH border, camera flashed, question?
  Hi, I just moved up to Massachusetts and live in a town on the border of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Today, as I was returning from shopping, I was coming up to an intersection when a car came out of left field and got in front of me. He proceeded to go slowly through the light which had turned green then yellow immediately. It was still yellow when I was going through it; after I had already passed the white barrier line, it went to red and the camera flashed. If this helps, I believe it was at the southern border of NH in Plaistow, NH that turns into Haverhill, MA (believe it is called RT. 108). My questions are: does Massachusetts have red light cameras that ticket people and if so, would this warrant me getting a ticket? Also, because I am out of state and don't have a license plate on the front of my car such as people do up here, could I get one anyway?
  Finally, please no criticisms. We all run red lights sometimes and I am not a crazy driver.
  
  Answer:-I've never seen a red light or speeding camera in NH or MA.
  
  What is common, particularly in NH is a strobe light in the red light to get the drivers attention that light is red. These don't take a picture - just there to be sure you notice the red light.

  Answer:-I have an SB-800 flash unit for my Nikon D200. The computer in the flash communicates with the computer in the camera which inturn talks to the computer in the lens.and adjusts for the lens I'm using.
  
  I also have an SB-16B for my 35mm. It while not as sophisticated, it does have a zoom function on the flash head that I can adjust for ultra wide angle, wide angle, normal, meduim telephoto, and telephoto.
  
  You need to get a flash unit made by the camera maker. They match their units so they can communicate various bits of information.
  
  Although you can find some older flash units, like my SB-16B that have a manual adjustment.
• Question:-Good camera high school sports in low light.?
  Requirements ...
  
  1. Sports in low light (high school football field with mediocre lights at night, high school gym with mediocre lights.)
  2. I also want it to be a well rounded camera for portraits, landscape, etc
  
  $1500-$2000ish for body is bearable. I like the price of the Nikon D90. :) ... but don't know if it will handle the above lighting situation.
  
  Just interested in body right now ... glass is a whole 'nother deal.
  
  Answer:-The D90 is an excellent choice as it brings you near-D300 quality at a lower price. The low-light, high-ISO performance is outstanding, and that's what you'd need under the two scenarios you've described.
  
  Currently, I use a D200 for basketball and football, and find myself wishing I could push beyond the self-imposed 1600 ISO ceiling. Anything above that, and the digital noise is really a problem.
  
  On the D90, that problem is history and I'd be able to shoot at ISO 3200 or higher with even better results.
