  For quite a long time I've had a buzz cut. But now I'd like to grow my hair out and I really like the way Bradley Cooper has his hair. It's like swept back but not wet or slick looking. In a similar vein, I like the way that guy Marcel from Top Chef has his hair, which is similar to Bradley's. What product should I use?
  In addition, please note, I am now growing my hair out. I do not need extensions.
  
  Answer:-When the hair is worn back off the forehead with no parting, it is called a pompadour style. The original male versions of the pompadour haircut originated in mid 18th century France and were what later came to be called a short pompadour or brush cut. Before Wahl's invention of electric clippers with the motor in the handle in 1919, short pomps were time consuming to cut and needed to be cut frequently, the less wealthy classes let the styles grow longer and still formed the pompadour appearance at the front with the use of hair oil to keep the longer hair in place. In the US, at the early part of the 20th century, the round top short pompadour came to be called a crew cut, and a little later the brush top short pompadour came to be called a flat top crew cut. With the widespread adoption of electric clippers, these styles became practical and very popular till the trend to longer hair set in during the mid 1960's. Long, medium or short, the frame for the face is essentially the same regardless of the length of the pompadour style. If you have been wearing a butch, it is relatively easy to grow it into a long pompadour by getting a slightly longer haircut every three weeks or however often you cut your hair: short crew cut; medium crew cut; short ivy league; ivy league; long ivy league; medium pompadour etc There a several products that will not give a wet look. Krew comb, jar variety at crew cut or ivy league length, or a matte paste. For longer styles, I am not partial to waxes and pastes, but would use a mousse though it will set up a stiff hold like a gel.

  Some barbers describe an ivy league as a crew cut just long enough to be parted and combed to the side, if so desired. An ivy league is usually worn with the hair brushed up off the forehead to form a short pomp front, and can also be worn with the short bangs brushed down on the forehead like a forward brush cut.

  To grow out a short buzzed summer style, assuming an average rate of hair growth of 1/8" per week and haircuts every three weeks: short crew cut; medium crew cut; short ivy league; ivy league; long ivy league; regular taper cut. At this point there will be around three inches on top and the back and sides can start to grow over the ears and collar with haircuts every six to nine weeks to add shape and even up new growth.

  A control wax will keep the hair looking well groomed at crew cut and ivy league length. A butch comb also helps- the small, flat, plastic, oval, pocket brushes that one finger fits through and barbers sell for about a dollar. A boar's bristle military brush is available for a few dollars and is nice to have at home.
  Grooming any of the short pomp(pompadour) styles- crew cut, ivy league, flat top crew cut- is basically the same and takes about a minute or two.
  1) Towel dry hair.
  2) Barely dip fingertips in jar of wax.
  3)Transfer wax to palms.
  4) Smooth palms over hair.
  5)Brush hair off forehead to form short pomp front.
  Whichever style you decide on, be sure to take a photo to help describe the desired haircut to the barber. If you need more photos of any of the styles discussed above let me know.
